There have been some very interesting posts here over the past couple weeks. When I saw the one about station presets, it came to me that the Renda cluster of WEJZ, WSOS and WKQL represent over 75% of my total radio listening.
And so the reality is I like what Renda offers in format. Personally, I've always been a champion for the underdog and I think deep down inside from the time KOOL arrived, I wanted the station to be a success and to sock it to Eagle. I'm still uspet that Cox Radio did what it did to very fine people on Christmas Day. Mr. Scooge would be so proud!
And as I continue to read comments from WCRZX, for example, reminding us that we don't have a clue what goes on behind the scenes, I DO NOT disagree with him. Renda is like a Mom and Pop broadcaster and it does not have the capacity to promote stations like CC and Cox can.
I'm also not naive to believe that blame is totally with a PD. Over the past several weeks, WKQL has made some moves that I believe are in the right direction but it won't give them a major boost in numbers. Opening up request lines and having interraction with listeners is a start. Tom Murphy is sounding better than ever and the Arf is upbeat and brings some good personality to morning drive.
The programming and positioning of songs overall has gotten better. Perhaps this will be the last time I say this but playing disco tunes is polorizing. There are significant numbers of people who will tune-out the station. That is documented reality. And for a station that has as many limitations as KOOL has, they just can't afford to play these type songs.
In some of the stores and restuarants I visit where I live (Baymeadows area) virtually all who were listening to Cool 96.9 are now listening to Eagle. When I tell them that they can find oldies at 100.7, they virtually have all said the same thing - they didn't know. That's a major problem for the station.
With all this talk of KOOL and the 12 Days of Christmas, I am hoping that the station will come back with a midday jock, tighten the music with an emphasis on 60s rock and roll and at least get some bloody billboards up around town. If enough interest is generated AND the programming is right-on, they will gradually continue to do better. It's not impossible for KOOL to be getting at least a 3 share overall.
Finally, as we all know, it was 25 years ago that we lost a major force in music - John Lennon. Given the impact this man had on music in the 60s and 70s, it would have been so good to hear KOOL devote a weekend to John Lennon and the Beatles. I'm not blaming anyone for not doing this but this represents another lost opportunity for the station to get some type of identity.
Perhaps with Gator Country now in place, WSOS moved and WEJZ in continued solid position, Renda can do the right thing and invest some promotional dollars to KOOL. With a new year, there are new beginnings.
