KOOL now voice tracked overnights

I work rotating shifts, have been a KOOL listener for many years, and suffered through Todd Wallace doing his best to drive KOOL into the ground, which he did a good job of. It's nice listening to what changes are happening at KOOL, thanks to Tom Peake. However, overnights are now voice tracked with someone that evidently is a novice at the trade. This guy is just horrible. Dennis Mitchell could do a better job, if it's infinity's great wisdom that overnights have to be voice tracked. Was this another Todd Wallace brainstorm? Better yet, bring back the guy with the frog in his throat that was there about a year ago...J. David I think his name was. Or...how about this? Make the nights "live" again. Whatever that would cost Infinity Broadcasting, I'm sure it would be more than made up in numbers, even though Arbitron doesn't report overnights. When I work from 8PM to 4AM my radio used to be on KOOL, I'd call and visit and sometimes request a song. But that's a thing of the past, I guess. When I switch to the 4AM to noon shift, I'm not going to be listening on the way to work. If I want a juke box, I'll get an Ipod.

It's pretty common to voice track overnights these days. If Mitchell is actually new at the VT thing, give him some time. Learning how to do it takes a bit of getting used to.

If you look at their website koolradio.com, it's NOT Dennis Mitchell. It's Drew Bland (who apparently is relatively fresh out of ASU).

I am surprised KOOL is voice tracked overnight. Isn't this market big enough to have a live jock on the air? Also, I thought KOOL was owned by Clear Channel. It seems like Infinity owns many of the major oldies stations in the US.<P ID="signature">______________

KOOL

really, these days, quite a few Oldies, AC, Jazz, etc. stations are either
voicetracked overnights or totally jockless. Not that big a deal, in the overall
scheme of things. Quite a bit of 25-54 listening falls off around 7pm, anyway.

But is it the chicken and the egg debate? Did the listening fall off because the station quit caring at 7pm?

after 7 drop-off

no, listening falls off after 7 (and has for years) because of TV, largely.
Remember, now more than ever, there are HUNDREDS of choices on TV due to
digital cable and DirecTV, etc. This trend has been happening, BTW, for a
long time.

Why not throw one of the professionals an extra few hundred bucks a week. It would take them an bour to vt a week of overnights. Putting a novice like that on a major market station insults the listeners.
I'm on the road after midnight a few nights a week as well and I've heard Mr. Bland ( the name says it all )
The kid needs to go to Cottonwood and develop his chops. He obviously was a Todd Wallace hire as he's got one of those big, deep, old fashioned voices. Problem is, he's got nothing else.
I enjoyed listening to the metamorphasis of Dennis Mithcell, he was starting to sound quite good.
Maybe Mitchell didn't want it as I can't imagine them choosing Bland over Mitchell.
KOOL still has a long way to go to recover from the Black Plague of Todd Wallace.
