They are tied for #2 with KNIX, with KHOT #1.

I find it amazing a oldies station is at the top. I am one who thinks the whole ratings system needs an overhaul but let me ask this, why would a 25yr old be jamming to an oldies station?

Few, if any, are. Why would you think so?

The strength of a station like that is typically 45+ (if either it's done right or else they're lucky) or 55+ (if neither).

They don't. Less than 4% of KOOL's listening is 12-24 and about 11% is 25-34- Most of it is in 45+, but they do so well there that they come out leading the market 12+.

Oh, when you investigate, the under-35 listening to this type of staiton generally comes from listeners who did not control the radio, but had to listen.

The ratings system is quite accurate as it is, but the data delivery is slow and it takes 3 months to get an accurate sample. This is why the Portable People Meter is now being rolled out, with Philly and Houston now off the diary and on the PPM. Guess what? The results are very comparable insofar as station ranks go...

25... I don't doubt it. You're looking at a 17 year old radio junkie and KOOL 94.5 addict... 8) 8)

Good for you, Lauren! Would you consider writing a note to Dan Mason at CBS Radio and telling HIM that? I think he'd like to hear from you.

And tell him to flip "Jack" in New York back to oldies... :) Good post and keeping listening!

Oldies is a proven format (hence oldies music has been around long enough to be old) plus has a devoted listener base.

You are not just jammin to an Oldies station. You are jammin to a great radio station playing great music, having "live" personalities, fun promotions, and market informative. Gee, what a novel idea to have all these things on a radio station. Let this be a lesson to CBS and all the other companies out there as to what the magical ingredients are in having a successful radio property. This is the way radio used to be. And this is no fluke either. Already the chatter is running high in the CBS hallways about taking this active radio approach on more of their losing FM's. Clear Channel, Cummulus, Citadel - Watch Out.

It's so KOOL that a format that has been written off as dead in many markets is #1 12+ and tied for #2 25-54 in Phoenix. I love the era of music they play and am happy to see it thriving in 2007.

I agree with RADIOGM that being live, local, and active is magical. This goes against the conventional wisdom but my belief is that the best way for radio to compete against the iPod is to sound nothing like one.

i would love to hear some reverb on the kool mics.

take me back...

Okay and here's the REALLY weird part. Monthly extraps (A25-54), it's KOOL #1 and KSLX #2! Talk about an aging boomer market!
