KOOL Still Disappointing

Was out running around in the car this morning and didn't have my CD's so tuned into KOOL to see how Tom and Maria were doing post-Xmas music fiasco.

Disappointing. It seemed like they were really struggling to find the chemistry and humor that the previous morning show had. Obviously the absence of John Michaels and Mojo have a profound affect on the humor and banter. It just isn't the same. Neither is the music. I like both people and when their on-air foils were in studio it was a lot of fun listening to them. Now, not so much.

Oh KOOL.....we hardly know you.

Back to the mp3 player.

I feel the exactly the same way. So much in fact that for the 1st time in years, I've removed KOOL from my radio presets. :(

The Nurse and I think KSLX does a better job sounding like KSLX than KOOL...plus they don't play the Four Tops!

And what else is new. ::) Since KOOL stopped playing 'the best variety of the 40's and 50's' this board has said that KOOL is now tainted and a shell of its former being and an embarrassment to the name.

This is the 4387 verion of the same thread.

Why can't it always stay just they was it was in 1957 any way? They were the best of times. Right (insert name of poster who the 25-54 demo has long left behind here)?

I've posted my last opinion here. To those of us who still believe in radio the sky is falling ramblings drapped in negatives and 'I know how to fix this if the suits would just listen to me' rants have just grown old.

Best of luck, all. To those in the biz keep making great radio. To us listeners keel loving the most amazing, entertaining medium ever created. Keep the faith. It will get better.

Bye, all. 8)

MMQB, please don't stop posting opinions. You know what you're talking about.

This board can't afford to lose someone like that.

Hoping you'll reconsider.

Well I guess that depends on what you consider to be great radio.

We can argue all day long about whether this or that particular song counts as an "oldie" or one of the "greatest hits of all time" or whatever the consultant is calling the music that hasn't fallen into the current category in decades, but what really made KOOL an example of great radio was the PEOPLE ON THE AIR.

The songs were always secondary...any station can play the music that KOOL used to play or plays now and make a halfway decent radio station. The running joke around here was about how many times KOOL played "Brown Eyed Girl," but if we're all honest with each other, I think we all agree that playing that song for the 57,000th time was okay so long as there was a GREAT JOCK walking up that intro.

The "stuff that goes between the records" has always been the hallmark of a great radio station, and KOOL had some of the best in the business...emphasis on the word "HAD."

There are what - four or five jocks left on KOOL? Hell, KOOL used to have four or five WEEKEND jocks who were better than most of the talent in this market.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again. What set KOOL apart from other "oldies" stations across America was the on-air talent. While other oldies stations syndicated and automated, KOOL was live 24/7, and it paid off in ratings and revenue. A few years ago (before the suits at CBS set about killing it) KOOL was #1 25-54 and at the top of the billing heap.

Now, after all the cutbacks, syndication and automation, where's KOOL?

Middle of the pack. So-so ratings and (I'm guessing) probably nowhere near the top biller.

I guess that's what counts for "great radio" nowadays.

Ford hit the nail right on the head.

The most disappointing thing to me, regarding KOOL, is it's free-fall from what is was to what it is now. I just can't understand why management would intentionally crater the leader in Phoenix radio and make it an also-ran. There are many ways to control costs but getting rid of your premier product (the on-air staff) just isn't the right answer.

I've lived in the Valley since 1979. Before internet streaming made local programming available anywhere in the nation I remember, when offered positions elsewhere, I would miss KOOL very much if I were to move. And indeed, I did move away for one year in the late 80's and was very grateful to be able to return. This is what this station has meant to me personally and I just can't describe in good English how disappointed and disgusted I am with recent events. And worse, I feel terrible for the staff let go. They were the epitome of their profession in this town and still failed through no fault of their own.

If I've wasted 10 seconds of MMQB's life reading my post I apologize. But I know of no other way to illustrate to KOOL/C(BS) management the damage they've done to their once great enterprise.

Ford, isn't 100.7 live 24 / 7 ?

I don't know. But 100.7 isn't an "oldies" station. Its classic rock.

To Evan O: KSLX was voice-tracked by Steve Trella from 7 to midnight until he was let go last week. Now, the pd has to do a mid-day shift, so Susan Stone has been moved to the 7-12am slot.

On another note, I gave KOOL another try recently, and the folks there seemed to be competing for KSLX's audience with the music I heard. The music list has definitely been expanded.

And KSLX is apparently going after KOOL's audience. I heard Brown Eyed Girl yet again on 100.7 yesterday.

I don't have a comprehensive playlist in front of me for either station but my experience is that KSLX plays much more hard rock than KOOL (which, despite recent changes, still is heavy on Motown and getting away from 50's and 60's light rock).

If your definition of Oldies is 50's thru 70's neither station really fits. I think KSLX still bills itself as Classic Rock instead of Classic Hits.

The only true Oldies station in the Valley seems to be The Lumberyard (1440 AM).

I heard "Word up" by Cameo on KOOL the other day.

They must really be struggling when they have to play songs from 1986-1987.
It just not fit in an oldies format of what was 60s & 70s. They are all over the place.

What's next?...Rick Astley? Boy George? Lisa Lisa? Michael Bolton?

RIP KOOL radio

You guys know what Nobody cares about anything anymore that's for sure. I got to drive back over to phoenix two weeks ago running a large grass seeding truck to a lanscaper guy there and the truck had an FM radio so I listened to 94.5 and it just sounds like nobody gives a poop about anything. The guy on the radio was bored sounding reading some magazine, and playing some real boring songs. The radio station sounds sleepy and like everyone there sounds like they are doing thier jobs with someone standing over them holding a rifle. Soon we won't be able to buy Chevys anymore either because the Chevy company is going out of business, and Maytag washers are made in mexico, and the guy at the dealer in Yuma told me he might go out of busines, and if he does then there wont be any more Chevys to buy and that's why they are going under because there will be no more dealers. The men in suits at 94.5 are all wanting to just play golf, and goof off. not me boy. i like to work and make some money. You know what? everyone is all numb because the news on TV tells us that there is no hope and everything is going to dry up. a guy told me last week that nobody is gonna pay any attention to this until the bulldoxers start pushing dead people into a big hole. i don't want to go into a hole. even the cable tv company is going out of business. how can that happen? I am sad about all of this. Why cant we just all have a good job and pay our bills and be happy anymore?

i listenn to the great 1440 AM..it plays songs that make me remember better

heard "Word up" by Cameo on KOOL the other day.

I was about to say "maybe the jock mis-cued the disc", but 99% of stations in the country are
on hard drive, eliminating operator error. Can't believe you heard that (you sure your dial was on 94.5, right?)
I can't count how many times in my career, I've been told by a listener that they are positive they heard
a song on my station, when they actually had on a different frequency---and didn't realize it.

Wonder what Lauren will say about this appearance by Cameo?

Can you be more specific on day and time for "the other day"?
Or better yet, search KOOL's music log on www.yes.com.

I went through Tuesday and Wednesday 5 am-7 pm each day
and did not see Cameo.

But I did see Brown Eyed Girl at least once. Some things
never change. ;D

That's been a staple of the KOOL/KSLX playlist for as long as Nurse Jeff and I can remember. At least on KSLX you don't hear the Temptations!

For goodtime oldies and some clunkers Gumpdusky brass likes, tune to Lumberyard 14~Forty....Your All Day 14 In A Row Goldmine.

The good doctor diagnosed accurately: Never played any Temptations when I worked
at 100.7 Motown is not C.R. And you never heard 'Cameo' or any other dance/rap,
just late 60s - 70s. But I was unaware that Cameo is a staple on 94.5.....does that really
classify as Good Time Oldies?
