Ridgeway

You-ray is where Bill Fries aka CW McCall retired before he passed away. He was even mayor there in the late 80s and early 90s. Super nice guy.

I recall a conversation with a person at KOTO way back in the early 1980s. Then KOTO was 10 watts.

I learned the programming seemed to alternate between rock and classical mostly depending on who was doing a show. At 6pm each weekday was a 30 minute newscast by the news director, a paid position thanks to a grant. Always listener funded, the station had small fish bowls asking for change at shop counters to support the station. The objective was to involve at least one person in every household with the station in some way. They were 24/7 even back then and were a pretty young station at the time.

That KOTO is going regional is something the original organizers might have never imagined. Then again, when I talked to them, they were the only station on the dial that had reliable reception. I have spoken to many LPFMer about how KOTO worked the community for financial and volunteer support. KOTO is surely a success story.
