KOUL 103.7 Corpus Christi sold to EMF

I recall KOUL being one of the first stand-alone country FMs in the entire country back in the early 70s. It stayed true to its format roots for 40+ years.
Now it's just going to be transmitting what ever comes down the satellite dish from EMF's mother ship.

I remember back in the 70s their legal ID said Sinton-Aransas Pass. This is back when main studios had to be in their community of license. Where was KOUL's studio?

In the 70's the studio was located near Gregory, at the intersection of Highway 35 and FM 136. KCTA was there too.

A sad ending to a once great country station. It was always an easy pickup here in the RGV back in the 90's.

Who says it's going to end? There's always a possibility Tejas will move the country format to one of its other stations. Don't know how likely it is, and I suppose I could be raising false hope. However, I could see Tejas moving KOUL to another stick given that 105.5 hasn't done well in a long time.

So when the 103.7 here gets interference from the 103.7 in Sinton (which happens regularly)...no problem...since it is identical programming. THAT is probably the main reason why they're doing this.

I also recall KOUL being a pretty slick operation in its early years.

KOUL was originally on 103.3. The change to 103.7 was part of a broader reallocation in the early 80's, which opened up the 103.3 frequency in Freeport and moved (then) KEYI in Austin from 103.7 to 103.5.

Since Air1 is already in Corpus Christi at 88.1 this deal is because KOUL is on the same frequency 103.7 as their station in Houston KHJK. Maybe they will try to down grade KOUL to move KHJK closer to Houston if possible. Or maybe KOUL interferes with KHJK sometimes and this will solve that problem.

I wonder what EMF will do with KKWV 88.1? Likely sell it I imagine.

I found 2 things interesting about the FCC filing. EMF seems to be in a big hurry to get the new Aux for KOUX built. Maybe that is because of tower work needed at the main tower for which EMF is lending 500,000 for the work.

The LMA was supposed to start om April 1 but I guess it has not yet. With the renewal of the license just filed it will be several months before the FCC approves the sale.

Also the seller appears to have a 10 year option to buy back KOUX for the same sell price if EMF decides to make it commercial or put it up for sell. I guess that is protection from commercial competition.

More likely KOUL is keeping their La Porte Houston rim shot from moving closer to Houston.
I would look for EMF to move KOUL's tower further south to make room for a Houston upgrade.

That's actually not correct. KOUL is not preventing KHJK from moving further west into Houston. As it stands now with KHJK as a Class C and KOUL as a Class C1, KHJK can move 50+ miles towards Corpus Christi without a spacing issue. The immediate problem for a KHJK "upgrade" is second-adjacent KRBE at 104.1. KRBE is also a Class C and is located near Missouri City. The spacing for a second-adjacent C to C is 105 kilometers (65 miles). The current spacing of KHJK and KRBE? 104.69 kilometers.

KHJK really can't move any closer to Houston without a major FCC rule change or some kind of waiver to the current rules. Because KHJK is not a grandfathered, short-spaced situation, a waiver is a total non-starter.

Have they changed yet? Radio-locator has them as Air one.

Nope...they just played a South Texas country drop and now they are playing "Don't Take Her She's All I've Got" by Tracy Byrd

KOUL made the switch today. 103.7 FM is now airing EMF's Air 1 programming.

Any goodbyes or anything from Tejas, or did you hear the switch?

I don't know...I just tuned it and it was already airing Air 1

It's all good. Perhaps an aircheck will surface. Thanks for the update!
