KOUL Evicted!

CORPUS CHRISTI — Tejas Broadcasting, which operates four local radio stations, is moving its studios to the Six Points area after attempts to purchase its Antelope Street studio building fell through. The landlord claims in a letter the four stations were evicted for failure to pay rent for a seven-month period.

Pretty sad to think a monster signal like KOUL and you can only come up with a 3.3 share.

You get what you pay for by continuing to hire the same losers. Aah yes Status Quo.

I also noticed the live streams for Tejas's KOUL 103.7 and The Beach 96.5 were no longer working. Anyone know why they quit streaming? Didn't pay that bill either I guess? Speaking of Corpus stations streaming, will Malkan ever stream? I'm out of the market and I'd love to be able to stream K-Bay and Hot Z95, both of which are very unique sounding for their formats. Maybe someday, they'll be online (fingers crossed).

Yeah this all took place back in March:

From what I have heard lately...they are in a world of hurt right now. They haven't been paying any bills at all. The lights are about to get shut off...phone bills are past due...they haven't paid the tower company they hired to install a new STL tower and move all the dishes over at the new 6 Points location....they are blowing off anyone they owe money to...the new engineer they hired is getting ready to walk out on them...it's really bad over there! One of the biggest problems is the new GM they hired (Juan Montenegro). The guy is a total d****e bag! None of his employees like him. He's rude, unprofessional, pathetic, and just doesn't get the whole Corpus Christi market at all. He's a horrible GM! I believe his days are numbered with Tejas Broadcasting.

Man where do they find these idiots? TEJAS BROADCASTING days are numbered.

KLTG and KOUL streams were not costing station any $$$ However, soundexchange does require fees for copyright and performance plays. It would have totaled $1000 for both stations. Station GM says "no" to paying that, and to turn them off. Station owner says "we dont have to pay that" and to turn them back on. They will go back on very soon, but will be given notice by legal dept at Soundexchange, and will be turned off just as fast. GM and Owner are not speaking same language.

They need to stop hiring these failed GMs/PDs and Consultants with big egos and bring in fresh new thinking or people who have a successful track record instead of corpus paranoid no talents, re-treads, and out of towners who know nothing of the market.

Every now and then someone comes in and shakes up the market but unfortunately every time the long time local re-treads with their lame ideas creep into the mix and the movers and shakers again are left with no choice but to run.

This kind of thinking has taken a toll on the market the last 35 years. I was just recently called and ask if i might be interested in coming to CC. I thought about it but why do I want to get into a situation where I will improve the stations revenue and ratings and have to deal with getting my nuts chopped.. Ain't worth it.

All Tejas stations are on the air as of tonight at 2320. I just scanned the dial and all are present and accounted for: KOUL 103.7 FM, KLHB 98.3 FM, KLTG 96.5 FM and KMJR 105.5. The RDS message on The Beach is "Party With The Beach New Years Eve at Brewster Street Icehouse."

this is hilarious. i worked at there years ago, and yes, they are stuck in a rut, and cheap as hell. sad that a huge signal like that is run by people like that. they should sell it already, and give the radio station a chance to succeed

Wow, this is an interesting thread. I worked at both KOUL and what was Oldies 96-5 back in 1996, when the lineup on KOUL was Doc Weldon & Terrence McKeever mornings (yes, THE McKeever who was Rick Dees' newsman on WHBQ Memphis), then PD Dave Collins middays, then it was John Elliot at night, later, Big Frank Edwards, who I think is still over at K99. We had a good staff, the place was still owned by Broadcasting Corp. of the Southwest, at least for another year till Grandpa sold it... although, frankly, Collins destroyed the place - was the beginning of the end, as he took the station from number 1 to number 5 in just two books! Married the owner's daughter, I believe.

From what I'm told, Collins went out to Nevada, and I never heard about him again. Tejas purchased the place sometime after I left, so I have no idea what kind of company it was then, although from what I read here, not too good, I imagine.

When I worked at 1600 Antelope, There were 5 stations in the building: KOUL, 105.5 K-RAD (alternative), KJOY (not the one in California) which was Standards, and 1030 KCTA Religion. I always found it bizzare that with that 50kw blowtorch signal heard throughout all of Texas during the day, after sunset they had to sign off to protect WBZ Boston. One would think they could have got some flea power nighttime authority, but as I recall, there was/is a Country station in Wyoming on 1030 that they also had to protect. Then, also, Oldies 96-5 KLTG was in the fold, but the studios were still on the other side of Corpus... if you asked me where today, I'd never find it. The studios were intact but the sales offices and reception were gutted, as at the time, the station was supposed to be moving to the Antelope street studios.

Its sad to see what became of KOUL. The mighty COOL 103 was so Top 40 sounding for a Country station when I arrived there in early '96, it's hard to imagine that this station could be doing anything to match KRYS, hell, KOUL doesn't even have a practical website! That's the kiss of death in this day!

Memories of Corpus Christi - boy that was the end of an era for me... I moved back to Massachusetts afterward, and couple of years later got divorced, everything changed in my life after my time in the Bay area, so I guess I wax nostalgic sometimes.

You mention "KJOY". What is/was that?

Been here since '81. Don't recall it. What are you referring to?

"Inquiring minds want to know"..

Clouseau

IIRC, Kdae was "Heart and Soul" for a few years. Kind of "Motown/Urban". I believe this was syndicated off the bird. Before that "KIKN" country.

I don't recall "Joy" so I'm really curious.
