Kovas files again saying they will shut down wmcw, wcgo, wkkd if they can't move

I think this goes to how bad radio is becoming. I know alot of people think that they need to "unclutter" the AM band but,
unfortunately these little 250 or 500 or 1,000 watt stations are the only type of stations that a small broadcaster could even
consider affording these days and thats if they are more well off than most people. I dont think it is good for radio that Kovas
can come in buy up every station around it ie. wcgo wmcw wkkd for no other reason than to shut them off and bring us another
foriegn language station. if I remember correctly WCGO AM 1600 in the last time they subscribed to arbitron scored a 0.5 share
that is what the suburban fm sticks are pulling in like 95.9 96.7 95.1. people also say that the flea power at night is useless I
disagree WCGO can be heard very well from the southern fringe of Hammond all the way to downtown Frankfort, and even farther
with fringe coverage depending on the skywave interferance which differs from night to night ,and the station only has a nightime
power of 23 watts.
I am not
saying I want to listen that kind of music all the time but it is nice to have that option if I choose.

I think WCGO doesn't power down at night. They shouldn't even be heard in Indiana at night. I get splatter in Lowell, but it comes in loud & clear in Gary. I've even got them all the way up to the Jays Plant in Chicago before I heard bleedover. That's why I believe they're still on daytime power at night.

Dave you might be right I think some nights they might not power down because they seem to come in louder than others, but if
you look on radio-locator there nightime coverage is finally up there(it was only listed as a daytimer last time i checked a couple
of months ago)there local coverage does cover Munster and goes right up to Highland and up to the north to about southern Cal
City and southern Hammond.

I also understand the AM band is too cluttered, but when you start taking away peoples local stations something is bad wrong... I don't know how well MCW is doing, but they have a format on there that to me is really choking the station a slow death which from the sounds of it is what KOVAS wants to happen... The business that I was so proud to be a part of is now nothing more than a lets see if we can move our station to a bigger city yet our wonderful FCC just sits back and lets it happen!!! Houston we have a problem when that is all a station is being bought for just to shut it down... The sad thing is half of the people in Harvard do not even know about how there station could be taken dark in the sake of letting another station "Power Up"!!! I could preach all day till I turn blue in the face, but the FCC would just shrug it's shoulder to small town America in the name of BIG Money!!! CC1

The interesting thing about these little stations in or near metropolitan areas is the business model. I can't find many(any) successful stations that you could point to as being a successful model. WMCW amd WCGO have facilities that could serve an audience. WKKD's directional license probably makes it too expensive to operate with the cost of real estate.

However I theorize that just having a community focus is not really viable with small signal stations in metropolitan areas. If it is possible where are the successful stations? It maybe these stations could be more profitable / successful if they tried niche programming. Programming that supports building groups of people focused around a common interest. I don't think that many people care about their communities as much as they did in the past. They have so many choices for media.

However if you have a love of something, and radio gets that to you in the car. It could be a useful tool to support a platform like a website or online community. I believe but for media consolidation, station prices would be lower and more opportunity for creativity in the radio would be possible. However simply focusing on localism is not enough in my opinion.

If you were to move these little radio stations into the city, they would be brought out by either by:
-Black Audiences
-Spanish people
OR
-Ethnic groups

Nostelgia or Adult Standard format will NOT never last in the big city if self, due to there are way too many young people and way too many minorities of all ethnics or races living in the city itself.

The young people today in Chicago want to listen to today's music and or their own cultual programing.
That'is way senior citizens crowd already moved out of the big city, and living in the suburbs or living at retirement communities that are way out west or way down south.

I believe that WMCW, WCGO and WKKD will do more bussiness with the senior citizens and their retirement communities, and just let them stay were they at!....
