KOVR debuts new set, anchors, graphics 2/1/06

KOVR's new set, anchors and graphics went "Live" on Wednesday.

I caught the promos tonight and watched the 10 p.m. cast.

First reactions:

Maybe when the eye candy isn't so new I can focus more on the content.

The show zipped right along, and it didn't seem to have that sometimes "tabloid" type of news feel that the old show did.

Sam Shane and his new co-anchor Pallas Hupé seem smooth, together.

The show has people popping on and off set at various times.

Tonight, Brandi Hitt handled a national roundup and other capsule-type segments, Dave Bender was in and out of the weather center a number of times, Kurtis Ming did several things: a package in the first half-hour and Ask Kurtis in the second half. Jennifer Krier did sports from the "left" desk as well.

Nice looking set... VERY Blue, but the video showing the set on
http://www/cbs13.com shows that they can change the backgroud colors to a variety of shades.

On air graphics are clean and easy to read.

It features a LOT of plasma displays and moving graphics. The design is definitely different than what's seen on other stations, some of which also have plasma displays and lots of monitors on-set.

Looks like they can fit five people across the back of the desk and have Bender on the right standing up.

The studio has a camera on a jib--something new in a Sacramento newscast--and it's being used to show off the set... maybe a bit too much? During one lead into a break, they sat on the shot WAAAY too long while Dave Bender was talking.

My waveform monitor (sampling what's coming down from DirecTV in 4:3 standard def.) shows low video levels on the jib camera and some other shots, making the set look dark... and somewhat gloomy. 60-80 IRE on obviously white items is a problem, especially when the shot before it was shaded properly.

There was one audio issue that I'd chalk up to the newness of the studio and the new control room.

On every live shot, the field reporter's live audio sounded like it was coming through a speaker in the studio as the reporter and anchors talked back and forth.

Maybe there's no muting relay (yet?)cutting the studio speaker off when studio mikes are open?

I was working on some website stuff while watching... and for the life of me I can't remember whether the bumper music was something new or the old stuff... and I was trying to pay attention!

Overall, I'd say that the new newscast/newscasters/set are off to a good start.

Be interesting to see what happens as things settle in at KOVR and ratings begin to come in.

Especially since there are two ex-KCRA news talents being aimed at the news leader by other stations. Shane from KOVR and former news-side guy Ryan Yamamoto as KXTV's lead sports anchor.
