KOY TO ADD SMOOTH JAZZ PROGRAMMING

KOY, it is being reported by this website and Clear Channel, AM 1230 will start airing Smooth Jazz programming on weekdays from 6 pm - 5 am and most weekend hours beginning Monday, January 16. Also, there is note that one of Clear Channel's FM stations will air the Smooth Jazz Network 24/7 on an HD2 or HD3 channel. There was no further information which FM would carry it. The Smooth Jazz Network is carried on KODJ 94.1 HD2 in Salt Lake City and also on KODA 99.1 HD2 in Houston.

I guess AM is better than nothing but it seems ludicrous that talk radio is now on FM and Smooth Jazz, of all formats, is on AM.

Thanks KOY for reviving KYOT's former format (even though it's satellite BA). This is the same format that's on KJJZ 102.3 in Palm Springs.

Probably a smart move, even if it turns out to be the lame Broadcast Architecture feed. The Adult Standards format is pretty much over as listeners have aged beyond any advertiser interest, and on top of that the format was diluted with soft AC songs in much the same way as the BA product. The result: today, KOY delivers only a 0.3 12+ share. It will be interesting to follow how they do going forward. Just for fun, read this: http://www.am1230koy.com/pages/history.html KOY was a monster full service station on 550 for so many good years.

I hear you, lt, but KOY actually has a not-too-bad signal. We got used to oldies on 1440, we can can get used to Smooth Jazz on KOY.

While the signal is okay during the day, nighttime (the hours they'll be playing Smooth Jazz) is a real challenge. Not only do you have all the skywave interference from the gazillion stations on 12~Thirty, but since the days of KRIZ Phoenix has expanded big time in all directions. Now it's hard to listen to Kay-Oh-Why at PV Mall at night. If listener response is good for Smooth Jazz, Nurse Jeff and I wouldn't be surprised if those tiresome classics are replaced by jazzy instrumentals during the day.

Like the move to smooth jazz at night! KOY music, to me, has been way too soft and stale for a while now. I like some of the 50's and 60's hits, but most of the music is way too slow and boring, Saturday Sock Hop notwithstanding.

Unfortunately, the move won't do us listeners out here in the East Valley much good since the smooth jazz format will only air at night. In Gilbert, KOY has serious skywave interference at night that makes the station barely listenable. Sometimes I can even null out KOY and pick-up KXO out of El Centro, CA. This isn't surprising, though: KOY is, after all, only 1000 watts on a crowded frequency.

On the flip side, if you live around downtown or on the west side of town, you'll be in luck!

I'm wondering if this could be an option to consider for the future for struggling AMs in other markets?

Broadcast Architecture has reportedly been trying to push the format to AM's for the last year or so.  I don't know if that means it's an option for the struggling AM, but BA would like them to think it is.

KQJZ, by the way, is also on an FM translator at 103.5. That's probably where it gets most of its listening!

Well it's 7:30 P.M. and I still have yet to hear any smooth jazz on KOY. I'm still hearing bumpers for "America's best music" and nothing has been played on the smooth jazz side. Just the usual same old slow music. Maybe the new evening format is suppose to start next week? ???

Back when we had Urban AC on 1230, its lone Hot Zip was around the state capitol. Anyone living around Buckeye Road and I-17 will once again be able to hear Luther Vandross & Marvin Gaye after dark via satellite if BA is still sticking with the Urban AC/"Smooth Jazz" cover song formula. And that's about as far as the signal went at night. That pattern looks like a big set of lips.

Listening to KOY tonight on the drive home and heard the new Smooth Jazz evening format. Interesting to hear one of the KOY bumpers exclaim, "Smooth jazz is back on the radio dial... Welcome to the Coyote." Does anyone know if they're actually piping in the KYOT HD-2 format for this? Or is KOY just adopting the Coyote name for the evening hours since they have the rights to the name?

Even though the night-time signal leaves a lot to be desired, it's nice to have this format back on the air in at least some capacity. :)

KOY or KYO...T? Really doesn't matter in the PPM world as only actual listening counts. Nurse Jeff and I don't think they'll let go of the KayOhWhy calls simply because too many radio types have a hard-on are enamored by the call's history.

This station doesn't sound too bad once the HD signal kicks in. Much better HD radio demo than radio disney :)

A-ha (Take On Me, 1985) ....one of the 9 owners of an HD radio surfaces. Let's see...KOOL Lauren has one and catfish has one. So who are the other six proud owners of a radio capable of receiving Ancient Modulation in HD? KayOhWhy may sound not too bad in HD, but on the radio in our '76 Gremlin they sound distorted and compressed. Nurse Jeff and I can only imagine what 12~Thirty sounds like at night with all the skywave, but the station is a no-show in Buckeye when the sidewalks are rolled up.

Isn't KOOL Listener Lauren's HD unit FM only? So maybe no I-CRAP from KOY, KFYI,
the former Sports Siberia 860, etc., in Lauren's case.

Don't know about catfish (with a "c"). But we do appreciate his nuggets of info about
Lumberyard 1440 from time to time. :)
