KPBJ-LP

It is going to have issues with KAIA also on 95.9. The KPBJ CP is at an ATT cell site in Sunland behind a Ralph's at Foothill Blvd and Fenwick Street.

Did a fast lookup. They are already halfway through the CP's authorized period (issued 2/6/24, valid for 36 months from that date). I don't know how often the FCC gives CP extensions to LPFMs.

Signal as authorized would indeed cover the east San Fernando Valley:

Terrain shielded from Glendale and the Sylmar/San Fernando area. Also terrain shielded to the northeast (CP calls for non-directional antenna).

KAIA protected contour ends just southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

I have to wonder why they're waiting so long to raise funds for construction.

The KAIA signal gets into the San Fernando Valley nicely. I wonder how they will afford the ATT site. That cannot be cheap. K.M. Are you still living in the LA area? We are having the annual BBQ at Mt. Wilson this week. PM me for details if you wish to attend.

However, the signal is not protected up here, so that is a moot point.

Maybe that's why they are already 19 months into the CP ... and why they're having a fundraiser. Right now, I wouldn't take bets that they'll make it on the air as authorized.

I just did a Longley-Rice on KAIA:

I don't see the signal conflict @Frequency1 described.

Is it possible you were thinking of KKLA on 99.5?

An original construction permit can't be extended in any but the most extreme circumstances. If you can't get it built and on the air in those 36 months, you lose it.

That was pretty much what I had presumed, but it's been a long time since I had anything to do with a station still under construction to remember precisely. Thanks, Scott.

A few CPs have already been returned to the FCC as the groups have lost interest in the LPFM idea. I wonder what percent of the grants will not make it on the air.

I drove to Mt. Wilson yesterday and stopped in Sunland. I was hearing KAIA all the way until I went onto Sunland Blvd. and got into the Verdugo Mtns. Then once I was on the 210 I heard KAIA again. Their site looks like it in a bowl. The cell site is far from the buildings. It is going to be a long cable to the transmitter shack.
