"KPBS fires investment adviser Wisdom"

That's the headline in the Saturday Union-Tribune at http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20050625/news_1b25wisdom.html -

"Wisdom" is Gabriel Wisdom, one time KRPI and KGB jock, turned newsman, turned stock broker, turned on-air financial advisor.

The article says he also "was fired as a paid freelance contributor to the "Marketplace" show, which airs on National Public Radio, because of plagiarism..."

Thanks for the allaccess lead. That points to a Washington Post story, which apparently broke this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/23/AR2005062301942.html

As a financial advisor, it can't help business when you're busted in the Washington Post for blatant plagarism.

I used to know and work with Gabe and he was a very talented radio person and an extremely smart person. His "rationalizations" in the Post article certainly don't hold water when you look at what he lists in his bio on his own site and others:

" Wisdom's broadcast career began in 1968 as a young pioneer in "Free-Form" FM radio at KPRI, San Diego. He was one of the prominent on-air personalities for KGB-FM San Diego, and KMET-FM Los Angeles, two legendary Album Oriented Rock stations during the 1970's and early '80s. During his 10 years at KGB and KMET, Wisdom was part of many highly successful station promotions including over 100 major concerts and rock festivals.

He hosted "Brainstorm," a nationally syndicated radio show, sponsored by Omni Magazine, from 1976 to 1981. Wisdom was the on-air Business Editor for San Diego ABC-TV affiliate KGTV from 1984 to 1986. He was the on-air Business Editor for San Diego CBS-TV affiliate KFMB-TV from 1989 to 1995.

... Mr. Wisdom is a graduate of the Harvard Business School's Owner/President Management Program (OPM-Class 26), and is a Vice President of the Harvard Business School Alumni Club of San Diego. Additionally, Wisdom has an MBA from Cal Pacific University of San Diego. "

This isn't the first time Mr. Wisdom has skirted ...

I respect his radio history in San Diego; but Mr. Wisdom was in trouble with the SEC on previous occasions.<P ID="signature">______________

Help me out here...

Without having to go read another link, could someone explain to me how you can have plagerism in a radio interview? My understanding is that plagerism is the act re-printing somebody else's work without giving proper citation or credit. However, it seems to me that it is a whole different situation when it comes to giving live interviews. If I read a story in a newspaper in order become educated about a subject, and then later somebody interviewed me, and regurgitated what I know (which includes what I've read), would that be considered plagerism?

It seems to me that if the answer to that were yes, then a whole lot of us would be in troulbe. Do I know have to give proper credit to every encylopedia, text book, etc, for everything that I've learned in my life? And what about all those people on TV who are reading stories that came off the AP?

I don't know the entire story, but if you ask me, something about this is not kosher. Please help me out here, what is differnt about the Gabe Wisdom story?

And befor I get in trouble, I'm basing what I write in this post off the information on read on http://www.sdradio.net, which was published by Chris Carmichael, on Friday, June 24 2005, and is copywrighted material (to him).

This was really not an interview: it was more of a news commentary that is "prepared" in advance much as a newspaper column would be.

So then, it was published?
I still dont see the problem unless Gabe was trying to take credit for this information.

Broadcast

Broadcast. In a sense, published.

Gabe's gone from KPBS-FM, PRI's Marketwatch, and his show on KLSX-FM in la LA are all missing from the airwaves. (His KLSX show was dropped from the station prior to this mess.)<P ID="signature">______________

No. Not safe.

Bzzt. Wrong. U-T should correct this.

Marketplace airs on American Public Media, a competitor to National Public Radio.

APM is a part of the Minnesota Public Radio claque.

Doesn't matter if it was published in print or not. If he presented material as his own work or expression when if fact it was sombody elses, he's guilty. He's finished, he got caught red-handed and I doubt the public will be hearing from Wisdom again. Strange ending to a local legend.

I don't think this will affect his business at all: he already manages money for lots and lots of people and most of them - and potential future clients - probably have no inkling of this "scandal."

By the way, Gabe's bio on his website now says:

"Wisdom was a frequent contributor to local and national public radio from 2001 to 2005."

"was..."

:)
