KPFA a no show with PPM?

Wow even at least WBAI, KPFK, and KPFT have shown up in their respective PPM books, though with small cumes of only around 100k and small shares. I'm surprised KPFA was a no show here, given they are Pacifica's flagship station and are located in Berkeley. I guess both KQED and KALW have the advantage here?

My own admittedly non-scientific "survey" of KPFA listeners - consisting of people I have known over the years who listen regularly to the station - would lead me to believe that your average Pacifica listener is not going to volunteer to carry a PPM. You know - the kind of person who would consider Arbitron to be a tool of the running dog imperialist war-mongering military-industrial complex.

By comparison, KQED and KALW would appeal to a much more mainstream type of listener, especially KQED.

I'm speculating, but perhaps WBAI and KPFK showed up in their respective books because their markets (#! and #2 nationally) are so much bigger. Of course, that doesn't explain KPFT, Houston...

My feeling is that KPFA by and large does not serve the Bay Area audience as well as the other Pacifica stations serve their audiences. Note that other radio stations pretty much serve all the niches that KPFA serves, but without the strident politics.

You want a bluegrass show? KALW has one; you don't have to tune to KPFA. Want someone who can talk books? KQED has one. Want a blues show? Try KPOO and KALW. Want avant garde music? KFJC, KALX, KUSF, and on and on. Want pro-Obama talk? Listen to KGO or KKGN. Basically, anything that KPFA does is being done elsewhere, and there are some things that KPFA should have done but isn't, such as Philosophy Talk on KALW.

Personally, KPFA annoys me. I hate to say it because I admire their mission, but the political strife around KPFA has driven me away. Except for the occasional listen to "America's Back 40", I don't listen to KPFA at all anymore.

I'm afraid it's a little simpler than that. According to the page on the Arbitron website that lists what stations are encoding, KPFA does not have an encoder.

Oh well, that, too. I'm surprised that they didn't get one. Even little KALW has one.
