KPFK to stream Spanish language in prep for AM station

From the LA Observed blog: Pacifica station KPFK is making plans to put up a full-time Spanish language stream of programming on the web that will move onto the AM radio dial.

The memo from their PD says they are planning to ultimately put the programming on a Part 15 AM which apparently can be repeated all over the place. Who knows what the ground rules are for a Part 15 and is this something that would go on the extended AM band or ...?

I bet KPFK-AM will get more listeners than KPFK-FM.

KPFK has always had it's own built in audience so they never had to worry about ratings

And that would be why they virtually cleared all programming after the morning daypart by either shortening some shows or getting rid of the others? A letter was sent to all show producers asking them to give up their programs because listenership, except in mornings, was not acceptable and donations were becoming difficult to get.

In other words, they worry about listenership, and ratings are the only measure of that for analytical purposes.

Such a shame to see the station having these lack of listener issues. I guess anti-Americanism just doesn't sell like it used to.

--KPFK is the flag station for Pyongyang in North America and increasingly serves the sacred cause of Che Guevara (butcher of Cuba) as California continues its Progressive journey to the Left and bankruptcy.
I listen to it fairly often while Roy of Hollywood airs his contributions on Tuesday and Wednesday wee hours--that would be Healthnut and Political whacko shows. It's occasionally very interesting. Often on Sunday mornings and early afternoons remnants of Alinsky's brigades man the barricades to hint at how The Right is plotting to destroy the last vestiges of freedom remaining in our would be Democracy.
The Spanish language programming has to be the most radical Communista propaganda in all the Americas. Seems like they could get funding from Venezuela if they just asked...but I think also that wouldn't fit in with the plan to shift ownership of the station to more enterprising hands. JMO.

Do you think that management even knows what they are talking about in the Spanish language shows?

I think Lenin would cring on hearing some of the content; Marx and Engels would be mystified at how much out of context misinterpretation of the concept of socialism and communism these "hosts" are guilty of.

Their actully is a voice of Pyongyang, I've heard it a few times on shortwave, I think one of the socialist countries in central america let the voice of korea put a transmiter in their country so it could be heard in the USA

I did not know there were any socialist nations in Central America.

Shortwave relays are not absolutely necessary as it's not hard to beam from North Korea to the US using the right band at the right time of day and season.

Let's just prove a point - it's sad to see a huge 110,000 watter get no ratings and have terrible programming. Does anyone even listen to this station? Here's what they should do, kill Pacifica on 90.7 and demote them to 88.9, then move KXLU to 91.5, which is a lot stronger than 88.9, then you can give KUSC an even stronger signal at 90.7.

1. If anyone deserves 90.7, its KPCC
2. We have a similar problem here in the SF market with KPFA, that holds a major piece of broadcast real estate, with a powerful stick on the commericial band, yet has also zero ratings

"...My general assessment of KPFK programming remains that there is substantial room for improvement. I also feel that the Program Director has to organize KPFK programming in a way that best serves the people of Southern California – and that means delivering programming that is no less radical, but, simply put, is more compelling than what we are delivering right now. 112,000 watts drawing in only 170,000 listeners a week in metro LA is not acceptable; even if that’s well above where we were one year ago. I truly believe that a humanist left perspective (and a radical one!), such as outlined by most of Pacifica’s programming, should be attractive to the large body of people here in Southern California..."
That was part of the assessment made by KPFK's interim PD in his report to the local station board in September. (Find it at: http://kpfk.org/lsbpnbmenu/160-meet...-program-director-report-to-lsb-9-25-10-.html) The fact that he acknowledges the miserable numbers and in the same breath thinks that more of the same garbage programming will drive them higher tells you all you need to know about the lack of reality thinking at Pacifica. Of course, this is the same outfit that hasn't had a permanent GM for over a year. The follies continue...
