KPHO 10:00 PM News

Some of you guys that know your technical stuff can probably comment on this: I often wind up watching KPHO's 10p.m. news when they rebroadcast it after Dave, before Ferguson. For a long time now, I've noticed that they compress it (or something) for that airing, giving the audio a clipping, staccato quality. It's annoying, but I've just tolerated it (like the fluff quotient in the nightly news, to begin with). The other night, it was gone. I had become so used to it, I didn't noticed 'til about sports. Were they compressing it for time's sake? Did they stop because it bugged viewers? Is Kent Dana now as old as Bill Close was when he left (All right, uncalled for...I actually like Kent)?

I don't know about the technicalities of CBS 5's news replay, but I'll tell you that I watch Craig Ferguson on KOLD-DT, Tucson at 23.35. CBS 5 should air The Late Late Show in pattern with the network, too.

A few years ago, during the Kevin O'Brien regime at Meredith, a device called "The Time Machine" was issued to some Meredith shops (if not all). A handy device that would drop duplicate frames of video/audio so sales could squeeze in another :30 or two to sell during a broadcast.
Apparently, one of the Meredith shops employed the "Time Machine" during a LIVE NFL game. A local viewer turned down the TV and listened to the play-by-play on their local radio while watching the CBS or FOX broadcast, and noticed a discrepancy between the video and the play-by-play from the radio. Viewer called them on it and the word from Mr. O'Brien was "we don't do that".

With that said...
CBS5 would use the "Time Machine" to compress the 10pm for rebroadcast after Dave. Cut another minute from the original show to sell.
Perhaps they reprogrammed it, to lessen the sound of compression.
