From today's (8/7/06) Phoenix Business Journal:
Two of Arizona's oldest broadcasting stations are combining news coverage in an effort to provide more breaking and investigative news, traffic and weather.
Phoenix CBS affiliate KPHO-TV Channel 5 and NewsRadio 620 KTAR-AM announced the joint venture Friday.
Steven D. Hammel, CBS 5 vice president and general manager, said it made sense to combine the newsrooms.
"It boils down to giving Arizona residents the best quality local news, traffic and weather coverage available," he said.
The partnership also will impact the stations' Web sites, www.ktar.com and www.kpho.com. KTAR's Web site will provide video links to many news stories, and the CBS 5's Web site will feature more journalists providing local content.
"By forming this partnership, we will be able to provide the Valley's best news coverage for our listeners and viewers, whether they are at home, in their car or in their office." said Erik Hellum, KTAR's vice president/market manager.
CBS 5 news director Tom Bell called the venture a "powerful" and "valuable" partnership for its audience.
"We'll be integrating talent, technology, and more than 100 years of serving viewers and listeners with local, regional, national and international news," he said.
