KPHO and KTVK's Combined News Department

The 2 NDs under one roof thing has been solved. FTV Live says Cameryn is leaving KTVK and going to Scripps as Senior Director of News Strategy. She'll work out of ABC15. Michelle Donaldson stays. Get past elections, into the new year and move KPHO into the KTVK building and then we'll see what consolidation moves they make.

Cameryn Beck, KTVK's news director, got a promotion. Sort of.

She's headed for Scripps (!!) where she will be a "senior director of news strategy" though still based in Phoenix. Scripps VP of news Sean McLaughlin (not the meteorologist turned news anchor) had this to say, among other things:

"At KTVK, she revolutionized the news programs and turned the ratings completely around."

We noticed the improvement at channel 3, and I even told her such back in June. She responded graciously to my email praising her work and wishing her the best of luck — which I do again as she jumps to Scripps.

For a number of years, I have had a constant dialog with the Executive News Directors at KTVK. Even though they may not have agreed with me, they responded to my emails, followed up on problem areas or spoke their view of the situation to me. Until Cameryn. I wrote to her three times and never received as much as a "thank you for your email and comments".

Scripps needs some new strategy. I saw the changes at ABC15 and now living in San Diego see the same marketing hype garbage. Instead of telling the whole news story, they are more interested in telling you the stations name three or four times each story or how they were the only ones to interview this person or how they first told you about this story as Breaking News. If dumped the marketing BS and got on with investigating the whole story and telling it on air (all at once please not part now and a part in an hour) they could improve their product and probably see results in the ratings.

But is that a totally fair basis for judging Cameryn's work. I would say that you were lucky that the Executive News Directors had the time to have "a constant dialog" with you. If even 1% of the viewers tried to have a constant dialog with them, they would be totally overwhelmed. I may well express my opinion, but I don't expect a personal response from a large company.

That said, Scripps in Phoenix seems to be trying to be more newsy. The addition of Stephanie Hockridge to the evening newscasts and Christopher Sign to the morning newscasts has been a step in the right direction. They did an excellent job covering the flooding on Monday without being over the top. No, KNXV isn't perfect -- still too much hype -- but I believe their news director is solid and making some needed changes.

How much cross-flow have you seen between KTVK and KPHO. I saw Rebecca Thomas on 3TV but didn't say the station name. I saw Jill Galas on CBS5 but didn't say the station name.

The other night I saw Jason Barry of CBS5 on Channel 3, and 3TV's Jared Dillingham on Channel 5 - both with no station ID on microphones.

Thursday Dec 11 on GMAZ Javier Soto threw to "-----" of CBS 5 (sorry don't remember her name, checked KPHO website and didn't recognize her).

At 6:30 PM, 3TV actually ran a commercial directing viewers that wanted more news to switch to CBS5. Also Erika Flores did a report on 5 but signed off with "3TV."
