KPHO-DT 5.3 cranked up for NCAA buckets tourney

...right now they're displaying slates of the Thursday game schedules with a loop of the CBS production music on the audio. It also appears that Channel 5 and KPHO-DT 5.1 will be running different games most of Thursday; of particular interest here would be the fact that the West Virginia-Arizona 6:30 game **will not** be on any of the digital signals, with UCLA-Mississippi Valley tipping off on 5.1 ten minutes later...

Will they have room for 2 HD and 2 SD, or at worst, 3 SD and 1 HD signal next year? Analog Channel 5 will be gone before next year's March Madness.

And, as far as any games involving the U of A go, I'm sure they want to maximize the viewership for that game, which still means being directly on Channel 5 in Phoenix and 13 in Tucson, both on-air and cable/satellite. Next year, of course, that will mean 5.1 and 13.1 in HD.

Unlike radio, eliminating the analog won't open up any more bandwidth for HD TV. KPHO (and everyone else) already has as much bandwidth as they're ever going to have; February 2009 isn't going to make any difference.

I'm a bit confused. With U of A being only on the main channel, does that mean it will be in HD on Cable/DirecTV? I know the subchannels are SD, but I would think 5 sends a direct HD feed to the pay TV companies.

I noticed that Cox is carrying both KPHO-DT2 (which they carry when it's "Weather Now"), but also the temporary DT3 channel. If this is so, why is Cox waiting until September to add RTN to their block of subchannels since Channel 86/5.3 will be temporary?

Michael H., you should use this example as a way to get RTN on sooner.

All of the games so far today have been in SD on KPHO and the subchannels. I don't have Cox, so I'm watching these using my DirecTV box with an antenna. Is Cox showing any HD from KPHO? What I find interesting is that on KOLD in Tucson, 13-1 is broadcasting in HD, while 13-2 and 13-3 are SD. Why can't KPHO make their 5-1 an HD feed?

Apparently they only have 3 digital streams and 4 (maximum) games to carry simultaneously, which is why 5.1 (705 on Cox) is carrying a different game than analog Channel 5, and on SD instead of HD. Channel 705 works with analog TVs with a digital cable box - HD not required, unlike normal operation.

Next week, I think they'll be able to return 705/5.1 to HD since there will be fewer games going on at once - 2, maybe 3 max.

Next year, they'll have to have a Channel 5.4 working for the first 2 rounds.

Apparently the Saturday Cox Channel 705 (KPHO-DT 5.1) games are in HD only since I'm not getting the Purdue/Xavier game on my standard digital box and analog TV. Since Channel 5.3/Cox 86 isn't being used for basketball today at all (it will be for one game tomorrow), they should have put that game on it and let 5.1 do an HD simulcast of whatever is on analog Channel 5.

Re: KPHO-DT 5.3 -- Gone!

KPHO-DT 5.3 is now gone dark - Thursday's and Friday's games will be shown on 5/5.1 and on 5.2; all subsequent games will be on 5/5.1 alone.

The schedule for Thursday & Friday is:

Channel 5/5.1 (HD)
Thu. 4:27 PM - North Carolina vs Washington State
Thu. 6:40 PM - UCLA vs W. Kentucky
Fri. 4:27 PM - Texas vs Stanford
Fri. 6:40 PM - Kansas vs Villanova

Channel 5.2 (Cox Ch. 85)
Thu. 4:10 PM - Xavier vs West Virginia
Thu. 6:57 PM - Tennessee vs Louisville
Fri. 4:10 PM - Wisconsin vs Davidson
Fri. 6:57 PM - Michigan State vs Memphis

Pregame show begins at 4:00, I believe.
