KPHO News A-Team on Sunday Afternoon

I watched the ending of the 2010 Masters on KPHO. Afterwards, around 4:11 PM, the local news came on with Catherine Anaya and Sean McLaughlin. I was a little surprised but it makes sense: the Masters had a record audience and CBS 5 wanted their main anchors on afterward. Good call KPHO.

ABC15 used to have their main anchors, Katie Raml and Steve Irvin, on Sunday nights when ABC featured buzzworthy shows Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy. I thought that was a great idea, especially because KNXV news was last in the ratings.

There was a tease toward the beginning of the newscast that caught me off guard - they used a cut of News One (which they last mainly used in 2005 but which KPHO must still have) instead of Enforcer.

They also use a specific cut of News One for their 7-day forecasts (it's that 5-note signature). Coincidentally, KNXV used its 2002 theme for that while they mainly used EWN - then they went to the Scripps package and it all changed.

It caught me off guard! I had just come back to town after a long weekend in Vegas. I had to stop and think about what day it was.

Considering how weak and thin the weekend evening anchor teams are these days, it makes sense to bring in the main anchors when there's some sort of special event. Fox10's team of Linda Williams and Marc Martinez are probably the best weekend evening team out there.

Don't quote me on this, but isn't Fox10 the only one of the five channels that feature 2 anchors on weekends? I don't watch Saturday or Sunday nights much. I do remember at one point Channel 12 had Kim Covington and Brahm Resnik.

Your absolutely right Brian. They are the only station with 2 anchors. I personally like having the duo on FOX 10. Speaking of duos, I always enjoyed Sean McLaughlin on Sunday's co-anchoring with Christina Wofford.

They even had 2 at Channel 3 with Frank Camacho and Kirsten Joyce on the weekends, no more.

Sadly, it appears that multiple anchors on the weekends have been cut due to the economy (just like everything else). Since Fox10 has the most weekend evening news, it makes sense that they would keep 2 anchors.
