KPHO News Schedule

Hey everyone, sorry if it seems like I'm a bit obsessed with KPHO with my other posts but I had another question regarding the news schedule. I was wondering if anyone happened to know or could speculate as to why they air the CBS Evening News at 6:00 p.m. instead of the time of 5:30 p.m. against the other local networks affiliates? Any ideas how long they have been doing this? I know relatively speaking they are a fairly young CBS affiliate after being an independent station for so long and the previous CBS affiliations at the sign on. Thanks everyone. I'm just very curious and fascinated by the whole news media and how it works.

Charlie.

I can't answer why KPHO airs their national news at 6. Maybe you should shoot them an email and ask directly. Perhaps they think airing it at a non-compete time will help poor Katie. They are a distant third in the news market and have been for a long time so maybe they just don't care. C(BS) national news has been on at this time for quite some time now.

As for KPHO being a "new" affiliate, not true. When Rupert Murdock blew up the Phoenix market some years ago. KTVK (3) lost ABC and went independent (where they flounder), KPHO (5) went from independent to C(BS), KOOL (10) dropped C(BS) and became Fox and changed its call to KSAZ. KPNX (12) remained NBC. All in all not a good move for Phoenix.

KPHO scheduled the CBS Evening News at 6 PM starting a few years ago. It predates Katie Couric's arrival to CBS.

The reason is simple: counter-programing. They figured (reasonably) that some people may want to watch national news at 6 instead of 6:30, when ABC and NBC are broadcasting their national shows. I can't speak to the ratings, but it makes sense for KPHO to do this since they offer something different at both 6 and 6:30 PM.

They are a "newer" CBS affiliate, though it has, remarkably, been about 15 years since the affiliate shakeup.

I would argue that the shakeup was not bad for Phoenix unless you happen to be a particular fan of ABC TV and Channel 3. FOX got a great deal by taking over a leading local news provider at Channel 10. KPHO got a nice affiliation which means more money than running old Dick Van Dyke epsiodes (as much as I personally like DvD). And Channel 12 became the Big Dog in town by default since they were the only netwrok affiliate to remain stable.

The real losers were Channel 3, which lost the prestige and money of the ABC affiliation (though they have performed very well as an independent) and ABC TV which got a UHF signal at an also-ran station. Channel 15 is better than it used to be and they have some good news people, but it's nowhere near the level of performance that Channel 3 was in the late 80s - early 90s.

As ever, Buster comes correct. Often, I'll actually watch KPHO because they do that. I don't have cable (yeah, I know :'(...but I just got a converter box...and just under the wire, evidently), so watching KPHO, then jumping over to KPNX, or whatever, I tend to get a couple more local stories.

Totally off-topic: Does Troy Hayden irritate anyone else like he does me? Dude, shut up. Just read the news. Go do sports if you want to doof it up.

I actually like Troy Hayden. Granted, he should focus on reading the news, but I like the laid-back style.
