KPHO whips KPNX at 10p

Stop the presses! :eek:Looks like 5's Dana and Anaya team has beaten 12's "Newsteam" in the May book at 10 pm.The king is dead, long live the king!

Let's see:12 News Morning Team LOST BIG TIME (switch Tram/Scott to weekends; Brahm/Kim to weekday mornings).12 News at 6 DOING OKAY (continue Cooney and Curtis).12 News at 10 NEEDS A BIG SHAKEUP (Bring in Hispanic Male presence)

Mc12 dethroned by 5 at 10?How will The Arizona Socialist Republic spin this?Maybe they'll call it an "undocumented" win by KPHO. ;D

I guess Kent Dana is finally delivering what KPHO hired him for - credibility. It was painful to watch him at first; he looked lost at times, and sometimes sounded almost as bad as George Bush speaking off-the-cuff. (Almost.) Catherine Anaya holds her own as well.Their 5-i team is a little shaky, IMO. I watched their undercover report on the Minuteman Project, and you could clearly see where they were trying to bait the Minutemen into saying something controversial. That's cheap. What will they do next? Rig a car with explosives so that it blows up in an "accident"? They need to just report the news, not try to make it.OTOH, KPNX has earned their fall from their lofty perch, for the most part. A revolving door in the sports department lately, that hokey "Cooney & Curtis" ad campaign, and worst of all, their incessant tie-ins to "Medium". (Almost as bad as KSAZ's constant tie-ins to "24"; but at least KSAZ's is for the morning show, where "infotainment" belongs.) It doesn't help KPNX that they lead into their newscast with that woeful NBC lineup.

I say "hats off" to CBS5 for the work they've put in since the days (or nights, I should say) of "Seinfeld" and their eight minute 10pm newscasts. To unseat KPNX at 10pm is a great accomplishment to which I hope the trend continues. It's time for a change of guard.5-I has done a few reports on the Minutemen. I wonder which report the previous poster is refering to. The off-shoot groups who don't care if someone is racist? Overall, I think 5-I does a wonderful job. KNVX and their Investigators have done some nice work too.Personal feelings to the side, congrats to Steve and Tom and the whole newsroom for taking a troubled product and turning it around to a tighter and faster pace.As for how the Repulsive will report it remains to be seen.I'm sure there will be a spin to it, making Curtis and Cooney look good.To Kent and Catherine, nice job and congratulations.

I was referring to the last report they did. It was this spring, but unfortunately, I don't remember the date. The interviewed a Minuteman group around Three Points, plus they interviewed one of the "offshoot" groups in Tucson where the old bag told them that they didn't care if someone was racist. In the first segment of that piece, 5-i had one of their people infiltrate the Minutemen and tried to bait them into saying something racist. When the Minuteman being interviewed wouldn't take the bait, the report switched over to the group that accepts racists, almost as if to establish guilt by association. It was clear to me that their action line was that the Minuteman Project was a haven for racists.

KPNX/AZ Repulsive Spin

I've heard that the AZ Republic will use the 7-day average to claim that 10p was essentially a tie with KPHO. In a station press release, KPNX is claiming victory as "Arizona's #1 choice for evening news." In the release posted on their website:"Arizona Nightly News at 6 pm finished the just-concluded May ratings period with an impressive 9 household share -- finishing 29% ahead of its nearest competitor...12 News at 10 pm also finished on top (share tie) for the 46th consecutive sweeps period with an 11 share..." Let me add to the congratulations to 5 for a job well done! (Regardless of 12's spinning.)

Definitely one of the problems of these media conglomerates. But back to the real story . . .Major kudos to the folks over at KPHO. It took a lot of time and effort to achieve this major victory. Help came from current and previous employees who helped make their newsroom the top station (IMO) in the Valley. Of course, NBC helped with their horrible prime-time setup, but I'm sure KPHO does not mind.I personally know a few people over at 5 (current and former) and know they are hard-working legitimate newpeople who deserve to bask in this big win. GOOD JOB guys!

From a viewers perspective, the only difference is KENT DANA! He was "lost" at first, but has regained his momentum. Kent together with some excellent CBS lead-ins has done the job for KPHO -- and, of course, the Enforcer theme brings an immediacy to the news. Kudos to KPHO for having the foresight to hire Kent Dana!Being African-American, I am somewhat puzzled by the lack of an African-American on-air reporter. Are there African-Americans working behind the scenes? We are 5% of the population here, which should rate at least 1 on-air person.

Don't you think stations should just hire the most qualified people, regardless of race?

If they are hiring in a color-blind fashion in a perfect world, then they should still have at least one African-American reporter. Thank you for proving my point!BTW, people used these same arguments years ago to exclude minorities. Let's NEVER go back to that time! Stations should have a diverse newsteam and it should happen naturally.

I read your post on the Atlanta board (the Rich Noonan thread). You posit that having an all-Black newscast in Atlanta might be a matter of being the most qualified people, and extolled the KPNX 3/4 Black weekend crew as a good thing, but see racist bogeymen in Phoenix because you don't see enough Black people as reporters. You can't have it both ways.

Nope. You are putting words in my mouth. I just said that KPHO doesn't have adequate African-American representation. My qualms are specifically with KPHO on this issue.
