.KPHO's World Beyond

If you live in Arizona, then you remember KPHO-TV. KPHO was well known for airing movies under umbrellas like Million Dollar Movie (not to be confused with WPVI, WEWS, WTHR, WTNH, and WOR's movie umbrellas), Movietime (every Monday at 11:00), TV5 Late Show, Saturday Studio 5 (every Saturday at 10:00), Sunday Afternoon Movie, Sunday Movie Special, and more. The most well-known program was The World Beyond, which aired Saturday mornings following cartoons. It would be followed by Action/Adventure Theater, and Western Theater. The World Beyond aired sci-fi and horror movies, including movies from some of AIP's film library, b-movies, and cheap movies. It lasted from 1964 to 1988.

That was typical of what independent stations showed back in the day. They're no longer necessary with the advent of cable/satellite & online movie channels. KPHO-TV has been a CBS affiliate since 1994.

Co-owned KTVK is now the major indie in Arizona, they air mostly news, some syndicated fare, and more than a few infomercials. That is typical of what independent stations air in 2020.
