KPIG Automates Overnites

KPIG became one of the last radio staions in the country to automate its overnight; 2 DJs laid off and another demoted from full- to part-time. Predictably, listeners are upset:

Now, I listen to KPIG here in SF on 1510, despite the crappy signal, and I think they're a wonderfully entertaining throwback to prog-FM in the '70s, but I really have to wonder if the millions they spent for 1510 was worth it -- what did they think they were getting for the money? They have yet to show up in the SF ratings, and have done little-to-no promotion. (Yes, I know that on their home turf in Watsonville they do quite well, rating-wise.)

Compare them to similarly-formatted KRSH in Napa, which is sorta like KPIG without the politics.

"We just made some decisions inside the company, all for economic reasons, just not to have an overnight jock," Hendry said. "There's no other radio station from Seattle to Los Angeles that has one."

I believe there are still a few, in fact, I'm sure there's one in Bakersfield that comes to mind.

But can you blame Mapleton? How can you justify 10k+ a month especially during a time where no one listens?

And no, streaming listeners on the east coast DON'T Count. Not like they're buying anything locally.
