Probably the text book definition of: "from the sublime to the ridiculous."

KZAP was CHR prior to the change to K-PIG...I'm wondering if this mish-mosh they're
airing now is a stop-gap toward another format change, because 1290 KPAY rules the roost
in the Chico news-talk radio scene...

Considering it's Mapleton running KZAP, this droppage of K-PIG does not surprise me.
Mapleton did the same thing on a Redding AM not long ago...

I'm waiting for Piedmont's KPIG 1510 to give up the ghost; has KPIG 1510 even shown
up in the San Fran PPM?

From what I could tell they had some real competition from KZFR - a similarly-formatted public station in Chico. It's hard being the syndicated out-of-towner when there's something else live & local. As far as the San Francisco 1510 signal, my guess is that they're not encoding for PPM, hence no numbers. No doubt, the audio quality on AM sucks, but Mapleton is jumping through hoops to improve the nighttime signal. So they've got to at least have some commitment to 1510. I also notice that their stop sets seem to be mostly sold, and they're sponsoring shows. I even won tickets to the Yonder Mountain String Band last month. 'twas a great show. Plus, it's pretty much the only game in town for new music in AAA. KFOG is down to maybe 3 new songs an hour. But hypothetically - if they were to flip, what to?

Mapleton's just about finished gutting heritage Class A KGA 1510 -Spokane so KPIG 1510 will have a better night signal.
KGA's being downgraded from 50 kw Class A to 12 kw Class B.

I don't have a problem with that. The Spokane market is just 8% the size of the SF market. They don't need any blowtorches there. Here we need the strongest AM signals we can get in order to cut through the office buildings, the hills, the Muni streetcar wires and all the other interference wrought by the size of this place.

It's really hard to be sentimental for a has-been radio technology. Heck, I used to collect old radios and old radio logs and I used to listen to old radio shows. Then one day I woke up and realized that everything was so much better now. Better radios, better radio programming, better fidelity...
