KPIG on 1510?

KPIG-FM in the Salinas-Monterey-Santa Cruz market is the top rock station there, with a very eclectic adult alternative rock format. I thought Mapleton, the owners, were simulcasting the format on 1510 in the San Francisco market?

But now I see the call letters at 1510 in Piedmont CA are not KPIG, they're KSFN. Also at one time, Mapleton was petitioning the FCC to allow it reduce nighttime power on KGA 1510 Spokane, a 50,000 watt station, so the 1510 licensed to Piedmont could cover the San Francisco bay area at night. Currently KSFN operates at night with only 230 watts, making it hard to hear even a few miles from the transmitter.

I'm 3000 miles away but from what I've heard, 1510 in Piedmont has been running its new nighttime pattern for several months now. Since I haven't heard that a license to cover has been issued, the station may be running at less than the CP power, which, IIRC is 2400W. The FCC often restricts stations running program-test authority to 25% of the CP power or the old night power, whichever is greater, so KSFN may be running only 600W at night. If so, it might take a confirmed DXer to distinguish that power from 230W. I'm pretty sure that KGA is also running its new lower-powered night facilities. If so, the interference it generates at night in the Bay area should be reduced.

Speaking of the new "Chinese format" on 1510 AM. Majority of the format is Mandarin, however, majority of the Chinese population in the San Francisco-Oakland area are Cantonese speakers, not Mandarin speakers. Mandarin speakers usually live in South Bay area (Cambell, Saratoga, Milipitas, Fremont, Santa Clara, and San Jose). If they want to target the Chinese speaking population. Then they should change their format to Cantonese instead of Mandarin. Just visit both Chinatowns in San Francisco and Oakland and tell me if you hear Cantonese or Mandarin.

Interesting. I wonder if the people buying the brokered time actually know where the signal goes. Or doesn't go.
