KPIX, er...CBS 5, uh...KPIX 5

I've noticed that the branding for CBS O&O KPIX has suddenly changed from "CBS 5" back to "KPIX 5" as it was in the 1980s. And the long-standing "Eyewitness News" branding has been dropped for "KPIX 5 News."

This seems to be bucking the trend for affiliates and O&Os to be branded as network/channel position.

I noticed the KPIX 5 branding. Didn't know about dropping of Eyewitness News. I think they should have kept and used the Eyewitness News more often.

KNTV Action News

KTVU was also "Action News" for awhile in the 70s, pre-Dennis Richmond anchoring, IIRC, though I think Richmond worked there.

For awhile, they were going for a more "tabloid" feel with those Van Amburg type teasers read by deep voiced anchor Judd Hambrick who would dramatically intone "Channel 2 Action News...at 10!"

His brother John later anchored NewsCenter 4.

Here's a 77 clip with voice-over great Paul Frees doing the station ID leading into the news:

It has been a common practice for CBS O&Os not to use the CBS (x) brand; think WBZ, WCCO, KDKA and CBS affiliates the network formerly owned (KUTV Salt Lake and KEYE Austin). But I wish they did not drop Eyewitness News; they could have done just fine calling it "KPIX 5 Eyewitness News". Me personally, the idea of news outlets eliminating creative news titles (Eyewitness, Newscenter, Action, Clear News) just makes it sound boring and redundant.

But easier to remember, I guess. Now, it's just "______News."

Maybe this will happen with station brands too, and we'll be back to "Channel____." Most people I know - when referring to a TV channel - still say "Channel 7" or "Channel 5," not "ABC7" or "KPIX5."
