KPLC-TV Lake Charles is streaming

With Rita heading in, KPLC-TV www.kplctv.com Lake Charles is streaming all local content. The stream goes on and off as they go back to network programming. I wonder if they plan to broadcast throught the hurricane?

KPLC's viewers are in the path of a catastrophic hurricane and have minimal coverage? I've been flipping them on and off and can't believe their lack of public information.

Anyways, KATC 3 Lafayette is wall-to-wall and streaming online at http://www.katc.com Also, KLFY-10 is wall-to-wall but not streaming as of yet. Good thing these 2 stations cover the nice folks over in the Lake Charles area.

KPLC is a very small station. They have a small news staff with hardly any capability to do remotes. I think they have one microwave truck and they have it at emergency command center for press conferences.

Basically, at this point it would be the same information over and over:

Leave!

Take one of the two highways going north.

Stop at the checkin point to find out where the shelters are.

If you do not have transportation, go to the civic center.

Leave!

Take one of the two highways going north.

Stop...... and so on.

I watched and that is basically the message.

At least they have streaming....in the BPT area, Channel 12 got cheap and put KTRK 13 out of Houston on their signal...that way, noone has to stay (guess the poor engineers may have to??!!) no legal ID of 12 anywhere..and NO local cut-ins etc...nice to know your local TV station doesnt care about your area.....Channel 4 is even worse....a crawl and thats IT!!! black screen otherwise...no audio, legal ID, etc...guess the staff left...
Channel 6 is of course doing their normal bang up job.....live coverage and still running CBS programming...amazing...I remember in the good old days of the Triangle when 4 gave 6 a run for their money (but then they had Ralph Ramous and John Garner on 4 then.....now only Larry Boileau-I NEVER can spell his name right, sorry Larry!-at 6 is the remaining "king" of news in the area)

Im here waiting for a friend to move a vehicle in the morning to safer territory and then we are leaving for parts north but to where??? I have a family lake house north of the BPT area...but not sure how good that will be with no food, etc..and Houston is not in much better shape....hmmm wonder if I could go back to Conroe and stay with some friends there...

Good luck to you all!!!

KPLC has moved to the 5th floor of their building and apparently have some sort of direct feed set up somewhere. They have very limited control of what is on the air. The are handwriting signs and setting them on the table. Signs that have curfews and their email address. Some of you engineer types might be able to tell us what they might be doing.

They have two modes and they are:

mode 1: A split screen and the left sside keeps rotating between different weather graphics. It appears to be automated and they have no control.

mode 2: Show a tape that someone brings in from the field.

Maybe they have this set up at the transmitter with a direct feed of the video with no switching capabilities???? They keep showing pictures they are getting via email by having the camera zooming in on a laptop.

Also, they only have one microphone. They are sitting around a small table with a kplc banner on the wall behind them.

It is small market TV, but they are really doing the best with what they have.

I must agree that KPLC is doing a FANTASTIC job. They are currently broadcasting from Christus St. Patrick hospital in Lake Charles. Equally impressive is the fact they are still on the air. I just personally have beef with the station because I grew up in the Acadiana area and they are the NBC affiliate for Lafayette, where their analog signal is very weak and HD signal is virtually non-existent. They really need a LP translator here. They also block every effort for us to get a local affiliate, but I think that may change. Now that I have that off my chest, I must commend their staff for their tremendous courage and effort.

Whereas it's corageous what they are doing, something like this shows their signal can be lacking in some respects for their viewership. (Like a few of us discussed recently about Houma/Thibodaux)

Reportedly NBC doesn't have an affliate in Lafayette anymore (with KPLC losing that right recently..It was discussed on the forum a while back)

How does KALB 5 Alexandria and WVLA 33 Baton Rouge come in at your location anyway?

KALB is watchable in Lafayette with an outdoor antenna. It has decent signal about 15 miles north of Lafayette. At one time, KALB was carried on the Lafayette cable tv system. They were dropped years ago when the politics between KPLC and COX Lafayette began (There is an agreement for KPLC to be the only NBC signal on COX Lafayette in exchange for KPLC giving COX some of the revenue from Lafayette ad sales. KPLC on COX Lafayette is called "Acadiana 7" and inserts Lafayette area ads over the KPLC ads.)

WVLA has the best NBC over the air signal in Lafayette. I have a small UHF antenna on the balcony of my second story apartment and I get an almost perfect analog picture. I am hoping they fire up the full-power HD transmitter, as they are the only hope for over-the-air NBC HD. Even with a medium sized VHF/UHF combo antenna I can only get a pixelated (at best) picture from KPLC-DT.

With regard to the tri-parish area, I'd like to see the NOLA broadcast outlets move some operations south and west of the metro, possibly Luling or Des Allemands to better serve the bayou area while not losing too much signal on the Northshore. St. Charles parish would be a good area for broadcasters since that area is less succeptible to tidal flooding and is somewhat above sea level. WBWORLD or TRIPARISHRADIOTV could better comment on their ability & feasibility to move there. I know there would be spacing problems with some of the radio stations, but maybe some TV stations could move.

The MS gulf coast would lose NOLA's signals, but is still served by Mobile TV. They should have a good signal from NBC, FOX, & CBS in Mobile, and have their own FOX & ABC stations. Also, they have stations coming in from Hattiesburg to the northern part of the Gulfport/Biloxi area.

I had heard that from friends in the Lafayette area about the KPLC signal over the cable with Lafayette commercials.. But for the area,Yeah it's sad when supposedly other NBC stations out do the one for your area...

KALB has their tower out in Forest Hill in SW Rapides parish and figured you'd
have a signal there as the FCC site shows it having a signal there...

Same thing for WVLA with it's tower in Addis..

Most have their DT signals up and running but are on STA at extreme low power (and the FCC originally wanted all analog off in May 2006 HA!!)..even the DT stations at full power can be questionable as what the FCC shows as acceptable at 41db has been unacceptable here as received by triparish...

I don't have the spacing rules handy.. But I think basically all of them could move SW as the nearest stations for 4,6,and 12 is Beaumont and 8 for Houston I beleive. (6and 12 are found on high powers in Shreveport,8 in Monroe also with 12 being a station in Jackson)

Biggest thing is no tower space that is high (as most stations are 1000 feet up) and some of St.Charles is limited in how high a tower goes up (due to the airport that's why most NOLA stations are 10+ miles away in Chalmette and Gretna)

A wise choice would be something on the WDVW tower in Vacheire for both Baton Rouge and New Orleans but I think it would take a frequency that wouldn't cause interference in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. (and to think, you can almost see the tower in Thibodaux where I'm at:)

Re: KPLC-TV Lake Charles/NBC for Lafayette

>This is all great information but what's up with the feminine weather guy on KPLC wearing muscle shirts, no shoes and eating ice cream live on TV and at the whole time showing zero interest in what is going on. And that homemade sign that says "BOWL WATER." It looks like a four year old scribbled it. O.K., you have a natural disaster but you can't write a sign that looks better than a sign for a garage sale? Back to the weather guy...he IS funny to watch. Someone please remind him the camera's on!!!!!!!!!!!
