KPLN drop

They lost half a point. Since diaries started Sept. 14, did they end before the late October flip of 103.9? What is the cause of the drop, flip or classic rock continuing to die?

I was listening to them today.

Now their call letters are something like KFRS...

I just can't get excited about them. Things must not be that good in that they seem to be running of what seem to be "make goods" for Boot World, and a canned message from the San Diego Radio Broadcasting which I've heard on KFMB when their commercial inventory has seemed to be lacking. It seemed like a 2 minute spot on how important it was to use a "big voice" in one's radio ad. It went on and on and on....

First of all, that comment has NOTHING to do with the topic in my opinion.
Second of all, it's 103.7, not 103.9.
Third, it is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too early for the flip to have any effect. It's going to take at least a couple of books before anyone can even talk about it. Geez, they just switched a couple of weeks ago. 2 Weeks, does not a book make.

Yoda I am...

Did these ratings cover any of the talk period? I was under the impression that they've been talk only two or three weeks.

Right.

What's most interesting to me, however, is that Infinity has not promoted the flip with any TV or print ads of any kind (that I've seen). Awfully milquetoast format launch, if you ask me.

Or else they are trying to tweak the format until everything is right. The first time I heard any ID sounders was yesterday...

I just can't help that it was done all in haste.

I think about a week, maybe ten days of this trend was Free FM ( sheesh, what a horrible name...as opposed to, what, FM that you have to *pay* for? "Free Radio" would at least make some logical sense as the name ).

And, in a case like this, when you go from playing music to not playing music - yeah, you'll see it. Everybody goes buh-bye.

When you don't do any outside promotion of the change, you just ensure that the people who might want what you're doing don't know about it so all you manage to do is run off the existing cume.

Which, maybe is what they want to do...then tweek it and get it "ready" and once they feel it's there, then and only then start promoting it.

But, it's Infinity, so...I would figure that, save for the addition of Carolla first of the year, what we see and hear is the whole shootin' match.

Exactly. You have to pay for XM or Sirius. Howard Stern is going to Sirius. So they are giving us "Free" FM. Get it?

Yeah I know, it's a stretch, but I believe that's the original idea

But, "Free Radio" makes sense. "Free Radio" as opposed to "Pay Radio."

"Free FM" makes no sense because there is no FM that I have to pay for. All FM is free. Any FM station could be called "Free FM."

Soooo no, I don't get it.

What they are counting on is that with Howard still on the station they still have a lot of people coming in every day. They are anticipating a large audience for Howard's last days on Free Radio as compared to Pay radio. The look at that as pretty good sampling of the new format.
This is not very different than Tracy Johnson making the format change to Jack with Jeff n Jer still on the air so that all the people coming into Jeff n Jer will also get to hear the new format. Now of course Jack also did a pretty good TV campaign in addition to having the morning show pulling people into the station.

Since when do station names have to make sense? Do you "get" the signifigant meaning of Star, Z, Jack, Channel, Magic, or US ?

> Since when do station names have to make sense?

Oh, I dunno. OK, so they don't. Whatever.
