Denver KPLS (1510) off the air

Even listening online is a bit difficult with only a 20 listener cap on it (In my 30 years of listening to online radio, I don't think I've EVER rtun into a listener cap like that. You'd thik they'd seek some professional hosting for that alone if not to cover Royalties too)

its not unprofessional hosting.. thats stream guys and quite the pros. its the fact they have such a small limit

Here's what I can tell you about Radio 74, the 7th Day Adventist Network. They are US Citizens living in France operating stations there. They work with local congregations to apply for a build out LPFM stations. Where possible, they have graduated a couple of stations into higher wattages upon giving up their LPFM license. They seem to be on the up and up.

Yes, I've heard them there, on a visit to Annecy and Chamonix more than a decade ago. They've been around a while. The programming there is of a more secular nature, and is mostly in English. They also have a presence in Switzerland.

"74" is the département number for Haute-Savoie (Upper Savoy) where the group was founded. Département numbers are incorporated into postal codes and vehicle license plates, among other things. A typical atlas routier (road atlas) will also use them for reference.

no no, you mis understood what I meant...... why are US Citizens running a radio network in france and switzerland that is largely meant for US audiences. I know they have signals out in france and switzerland but theyre always crying extreme poverty out there.. why dont they operate the network from the US?

I keep checking to see if they are back on the air. I'm not affiliated with their church group but I liked their soft music at night. I would turn them on while falling asleep. I guess right now it's just wait-and-see.

Radio 74 in the United States, labeled Radio 74 Internationale, has different programming, more secular in nature (as I mentioned upthread!) than the European programming.

Same reason as I stated immediately above. There are also restrictions on religious broadcasting in France.

The more pertinent question would be why they bought an AM station in the upper reaches of the dial five years ago for $600,000. Yes, it has a good signal, comparatively speaking, but trying a Max Media-type move with the Strasburg FM might have gained more. Sure, KBNO wouldn't have been happy, but translators are always a secondary service.

What gets ME (As I'm sure as it does someone like you who's probably in the biz) is WHY the station committed streaming suicide by capping its listenership like that

You'd expect THAT out of somebody doing their own hosting running nothing more than a SHOUTcast server pn their home Internet like what I used to do with my Old Time Radio stations once I parted ways with the original Live365 back in the day (Except my listenership cap was based pn my upload speed to the Internet & since either CenturyLink or Comcast were my providers, I NEVER got close to it with the stuff I was streaming)

Stremaing is CHEAP.. 20 listeners might cost.. $5

Still off the air as of March 1. No silent notification, no STA, or at least none that I can find.

Has anyone heard anything about whether or not KPLS will return to the air? They're still off air as of May 16. Still no silent notification. No updates on their website.

Nope, not a thing.

I listened to the KPLS stream one day a couple of weeks ago (so you wouldn't have to) and it sounded like they were still running fundraising announcements from December. KPLS-FM is blocked in Denver by the KBNO translator, so I have no idea whether KPLS-FM is still up.

Nothing at all from 2025 on either the KPLS or Radio 74 Facebook pages.

Slightly more than six months have passed, effective today (July 1), since KPLS stopped broadcasting and it's still off the air. It appears little has changed. There's no silent notification or STA filed with the FCC, there's nothing new on its website or Facebook pages, and the stream is still going.

So no one is reporting it to the FCC? Six months silent without notification and request for STA is definitely a violation.

they depend on records of the licensee. i wont say how i know, but i know

First off, while I have a fairly good level of confidence in the FCC databases, I'm not confident enough in them to consider them to be conclusively authoritative. For one thing, I don't know whether there were any verbal interactions between the KPLS owners and the FCC staff, nor do I know the nature of those interactions. I prefer to stick with the facts as I know them.

Beyond that, broadcasters wanted deregulation and a weakened FCC and they got it. In fact, they seem to want an even weaker regulatory environment. So if the broadcast environment is more unruly now, well, that's the consequence. Far be it from me to step in to try to be a substitute enforcer. In my view, when it's appropriate for me to file a complaint is if I believe that some kind of harm is being done to other parties. The tone heard 'round the states on 1090 from KMXA was an example. To KMXA's credit, they got that fixed. In the case of a silent station that's not reporting its status, the only harm is self-inflicted. Radio 74's only hurting themselves. It's puzzling to see that this situation has gone on for more than half a year, but no other stations, nor the audience, are being harmed.

Others may feel differently, and that's fine. If someone else wants to report the situation, in this instance, I don't care one way or the other.

Another deadline is staring down Radio 74. The CP for its upgrade of KPLS-FM (97.7) in Strasburg, east of Denver, appears to be expiring at the end of this month. Certainly a CP application can be re-filed, but, considering the apparent problems with the AM station, the situation is notable.
