KPLU Intent to sell to KUOW

I only brought KMIH up because you guys were speculating about a sale of KNHC or KBCS at some point down the line.

"you guys?" I don't recall ever typing anything about either of those stations in this thread.

Come on AQH, what was that for? I didn't mention you anywhere in that last post. If I remember correctly, it was Kelly, Rob and maybe Fordranger that were talking about KBCS and KNHC.

Bob, AQH only needs an excuse t go off on someone...you just happened to be it this time. Who knows, I could be next. (He or she is probably stressed out that they will receive a pink slip in their stocking this year...'tis the season you know).

Because you answered a question in a post with my name (my quote) in it by saying "you guys."

Aren't you just adorable?

Well the key thing here is to have a community group in place that has the necessary funds available to not only buy the station but also operate it.

Perhaps the folks at KING-FM?

There is one: http://savekplu.org/

And bearing in mind if the same forces that got KEXP their snazzy new digs donate to Friends of KPLU, this $8 million could be raised in no time.

Public radio seems to be where that "disposable income" demographic has gone....

They will need a lot more than $8 million. They need operating expenses too. If I was setting a goal, I'd set it at $15 million, half for the license, and the other half to establish the endowment to fund operations, at least until the next fundraiser. Or they can partner with someone to help with operating expenses, such as studio location, salaries, insurance, lawyers, engineers, etc. And the clock is ticking. But yes, Seattle is a unique market as evidenced by KEXP. So who knows?

You're right about the $8 million. They will probably need quite a bit more. I think that can be met. But six months isn't a long time either.

But when time's up, we will finally witness just how much does Seattle love it's public radio.

And if so, could there a lesson in that for everybody?

I wonder if all the "companion" signals and frequencies go along with or if they get stripped off and KUOW gets what they wanted of that batch like original sale structure. Lowers the price for the public group trying to buy them. I think KPLU is cash positive from an operations stand point so it's a money maker from that standpoint. So then it's just coming up with the money for the purchase.

That assumes the seller will allow them to operate in the old facility rent free, and the employees are OK waiting for their first check. Neither too likely.

The first part of your post makes sense, and I'm sure it's all negotiable. However, if they lose some of those translators, it might affect their fundraising.
