KPLU Moving It's Mount Vernon 91.1 Translator To 105.5

Yeah, the CBC with more plans for redundant repeaters.
They can't help the CRTC said "no" to CBU on a powerful 88.1, and instead allowed a weaker 88.1 with 690 AM remaining the 'primary service.'

I wonder, can they track with BBM's PPM's who is listening to AM vs. FM?

I don't think KPLU had to run over to 105.5 in Skagit County because of any interference from Canada. When I"ve driven thru there in the past, I always was impressed by how well that 91.1 translator carried a strong, clear signal for quite a distance. Could even hear it in the car pretty strongly well south of its contour, in Lynnwod, but it disappeared quickly south of Edmonds.

Instead, a new religious station signed on Thursday from Port Townsend on 91.1, with higher wattage than anything else I've heard pop up on the Peninsula in the past couple of years. Comes in loud and clear in N. King County. I forget the "Voice of Hope"' call letters, but it sounds like the 7th Day Aedventist version of Harold Camping's dry-as-the-dust-ye-shall-soon-become style of religious radio. Just what the public has been clamoring for more of.

How did they persuade the FCC to let them construct a relatively powerful signal on a first adjacent to Victoria's 100kw (or equivalent) commercial top-40 station on 91.3, which can't be more than 30 miles away from them, across salt water? On top of that, I'm now getting a lot more fuzz on 90.9 from Tacoma and 91.3 from Bellevue than was ever there before Thursday, and I live off 200th St N in Shoreline, thanks to the new 91.1 signal.

How did these guys squeeze in a full power signal on a first adjacent to a class A such a short distance away, when no one else was allowed to before? It's even closer than the 100.3/100.5 deal between Victoria and Vancouver. And a lot more wattage than the new LPFM's in Sequim and Pt Townsend (who are likewise first adjacents to biggies in Victoria).

I don't know what they're thinking shoehorning all these stations up here, but FM radio is getting pretty miserable to listen to up here while driving. I hear CKYE 93.1 in Bellingham almost as solid at 92.9. But there's often bleedover on both frequencies - especially on the hills. Same with 104.1/104.3, 100.3/100.5......

Hate to tell you this but there is an application in front of the CRTC now to increase the power of CBU-2 88.1 Vancouver from 19,500 watts to 97,600 watts once CHEK TV-6 makes the move to digital. Speculation is also running high that the CBC will once again apply to shut 690 down once the power increase to 88.1 is implemented.

KROH.

As far as the FCC is concerned, CJZN 91.3 doesn't exist. As long as KROH doesn't cause any interference **in Canada**, the FCC is fine with it.

I started out in radio working at stations near the Canadian border - our signals had to be directionalized and powered down to protect neighboring stations, even 50 or 200 miles away, AM and FM (and TV), and, frustrating as it might have been sometimes, the dials weren't nearly as muddled as they are now, even with the atmosphereic effects Lake Erie played in the summer months. And you could hear signals for most all of their actual contour - usually well beyond.

It's bad enough that the border patrol want to treat us US citizens like we're criminals escaping to a "foreign country" whenever we come back from crossing the border into Canada. But radio signals, ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE'S A LARGE BODY OF WATER, don't respect those "borders," unless they are running extremely tight and well-planned directional antenna arrays - and with Puget Sound, or the Great Lakes, I still wouldn't trust that to keep previously-unthinkable short spacing of signals from causing havoc. And, therefore, making the radio dial less and less listenable in cars, where most people are doing their listening - or trying to, anymore.

While I support having more players in radio station ownership and programming, this lack of solid planning on signal allocations is proving itself to be anything but a solution.

It's so bad out here, I have to run my Part 15 transmitter on 94.9 because there's really no place else to transmit. At least KUOW has KQOW (their Bellingham repeater) so they're not suffering by mine or anyone else's use of their main frequency. During the summer tropo months, even 94.9 becomes unusable and I have had to jump somewhere else (sorry KCMS.) I used to use 106.1, but since KWPZ went HD, that's hasn't been an option

Seattle FM signals are also being eaten away by the Vancouver Island stations. KIRO-FM often has clashes with CKLR in Bellingham. Same with 106.9 and sometimes 99.9. I have a gut feeling it will not end here. As I mentioned earlier, there's already an application for KPLU's Bellingham translator to move to 101.5.

Speaking of low-powers, I noticed KAVZ-LP 102.5 out in Deming has been off the air for an awfully long time. I only heard them a couple times. They broadcasted only in the early evening hours - not the greatest time to be on the air when almost everybody else is watching TV. I mean, if they're going to be an alternative, then at least be on during the time of day they have a better chance of being one......

KZOK puts in a noisy, mostly unlistenable signal out there today. But when they were on Cougar, they actually came in surprisingly well up there.

I've all but given up FM DXing out here. Aside from that 20 minute blast of KTWV (got a clear legal ID and a nice Sade tune at the top of the hour. Unfortunately, I was in my car or I'd have taped it.) I got last December, there's not much hope out here on FM anymore........

The Seattle stations do come in nicely over in Oak Harbor. Couldn't hear CKLR, or 99.9 The Lounge on the island, or even CHWF fighting with Warm. I think I barely heard CHLY 101.7 but that's the only one I heard.

I got KTWV this year via E-skip! It was on May 22nd IIRC. I heard Anita Baker's "Giving You the Best That I Got", something I HAVEN'T heard on Seattle radio since KWJZ went bye bye...nice ID for The Wave as well. Also logged Q104.7 in Ventura, CA, K-EARTH 101 (KRTH) in LA, tons of SS stations, 105.7 The Walrus in Tijuana with oldies, a few Fresno's (Y101 101.1 comes to mind, also KSKS 93.7) and KHOP 95.1 Modesto, which is my shortest Es log I've made in my DXing career, at 694 miles. Others, but it would take a while to list them. I don't think I've ever heard any fights with CHWF in my NW Wash. trips at all. CKWV can be heard at Deception Pass, and I also logged KRQT 107.1, gonna say Tr on that since there was a large opening that day bringing KDUK 104.7, KHPE 107.9 over IBOC, and Portland's like locals into Western WA.

And Bongwater, you should use this service when conditions are up: http://dxworld.com/tvfmlog.html. I'm Seattle CN87 on the skiplog, and when there's DX arising, you can post your logs on Radio Info or on the log.
