KPLX - What's with the audio problems?

KPLX "The Wolf" proudly proclaims themselves to be the 'most listened to country radio station in America'... but I honestly don't see how that can be remotely true with the amount of technical problems the station lets escape onto the air. Over the last three to five months things have been quite dicey with the most notable problem being skips and stuttering in music played on the station. It's really come to a head this weekend with most tracks being hit with dozens of skips - it's come to the point where the station is actually annoying to listen to. It's like someone is letting Max Headroom filter the audio...

Am I the only one who has noticed this? Does anyone have any inside information on the problem and technical details on what may be causing it? If I didn't know any better I'd say they were playing REALLY scratched CDs - but isn't everything played from massive hard drive based automation systems these days?

There's a good chance that anyone that listens to country won't notice the difference.

::)

Norm Philips is now VP at Gap Broadcasting. And no, that's not something you'd hear on one of his stations.

When servers wear out, skipping audio is rampant. With very tight bottom lines these days, delays in replacing equipment is common place. This is only a guess, but from your description, it's an educated conclusion.

I've now figured out that it must be a problem with their song library... I've heard several of the same songs now that skip in the exact same places.

That must be one crack IT department they have....

Sorry, I'm trying to figure out what a radio station IT department has to do with the particular version of song a station plays. If they have some that are bad, they should be able to replace them with no problem. But that's more of a PD/MD type thing than an IT thing.

.....I must refer you back to an earlier post........server issues. It's common. What is dissapointing is the time it takes management to approve a fix......at any station. When sound is all you sell, somebody doesn't seem to mind a defective product now & again.

If they can't fix it with duct tape or a box of cat 5, they probably don't have the ability to repair things. Lol! I'm kidding, sorta. Most broadcast engineers arent IT guys, and management these days are usually not willing to whosale out bad systems when things act up. This leaves overworked engineers to fight their way through hardware issues like sound cards, dragged drives, or gimped software that could cause the skip issues. It could even be an digital stl issue in some cases. Fun times.
