KPNX hires VJs

Word on the street is that KPNX has hired 3 VJs as one-man-bands to report for them, ala KRON.

They will be paid around $35,000 a year and use Canon cameras to file their reports.

Where is this business headed?

NewsPhotog mag did a feature on this "new-wave" of one man bands last year.
It only makes sense, since most reporters are just talking mic. stands anyway.

I heard about KPNX doing this about two weeks ago, and wasn't all that surprised. Bigger markets can afford this, since any good Photog. can report.
I've learned that a good visual can make up for bad audible. Meaning you don't have to know how to write...so long as your video is good enough. Besides, less is more....right?

I shot t.v. news for years...and did a lot of reporting for spot news. And even though I had already done radio reporting, I found t.v. reporting to be easier. Why? Nat sound!!!

In any event, Reporters be warned...if you don't know how to shoot, your options may be limited very soon! (FYI...learn how to get a white balance!)

Apparently, this business is headed where every other American business is headed. We have to do MORE with LESS, must cut back on the budget, must cut back on the number of employees, must use more high tech solutions, etc. I see the VJ's being part of that trend. That being said, I hope that KPNX has a mixture of both VJ's and traditional reporters.
