Hey there gang,

We talk a lot about what's wrong with radio in 2009 as far as Bay Area stations go, but today I want to heap some praise upon a little community-based, nonprofit, non-commercial radio station in San Francisco, KPOO, 89.5 FM in San Francisco.

When I'm not listening to my favorite sports stations (KNBR 680 & 1050 AM, KTRB 860 AM), rock stations (KSAN 107.7, KFOG 104.5, KUFX 98.5, KKSF 103.7), classical station (KDFC 102.1 FM), jazz station (KCSM 91.1), I tune in to KPOO on Tuesday afternoons from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm to catch a radio program, "Uplift! The Music of John Coltrane", hosted by Wanika King–Stephens.

I've been tuning into this show for about 5 years now, and if your a fan of the great jazz music of John Coltrane, you will simply love what Wanika is spinning for 4 hours every Tuedsay afternoon on KPOO.

Last night (Wed. 9/23) I got a chance to meet the host of the program, Wanika King-Stephens, as well as hearing her playing bass guitar with a wonderful group of jazz musicians playing the timeless music of John Coltrane in celebration of his 83rd birthday, held at the Saint John Will-I-Am Coltrane African Orthodox Church, on Fillmore St.

In this day of commercial radio blaring out at us from all directions 24/7, it is so refreshing and uplifting to hear a radio station that caters to the local community in which it broadcasts.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on KPOO's eclectic programming and it's place in the Bay Area's radio station ratings.

Cheers,

Hear! Hear!

A friend turned me on to KPOO 4 or 5 years ago, specifically JJ's Sat nite '70s & '60s show (10pm-2am). From there I discovered his Tuesday morning show and soon I was listening to their wonderful Monday lineup:

9-noon: Marilynn's "dirty blues" show
noon-4: mah man Judge and his great mix of forgotten soul funk & disco sides from the '70s and '80s
8:30p-midnite Jim Rigsbee's oldies show

Hooray for KPOO!
