KPRC 950 changes

Several weeks into this thing it is sounding worse everyday. I have heard more women that used to listen so pissed off at the new lineup. What moronic PD or GM would ever consider throwing a chunk of its audience out of the window for unproven and untalented hosts. This horrible experiment should end before they are down to 50th place in the ratings and having to struggle for years to recover.

i will definantly have to agree with you. my parents think its a weird name for a station and they can not stand walton and johnson wich is understandable. so yeah my mom is real pissed

I am very happy with the change. Thank you, Clear Channel for sending a lot of former KPRC listeners to KNTH. We have received many calls concerning their very astute programming decision. I'm sure many went to KSEV, as well.

Yep, I got reaquainted with my channel knob. I was a huge fan of KPRC and hardly ever changed the channel. Now I switch all day long. How stupid to turn your back on the female audience. They claim to not have done that, but listen to the promos! I must say, my husband has warmed up to a few of the shows however, but I haven't at all.

Looking at the PPM weeklies... considering that KPRC is 29th in adults 25-54, and KNTH is 33rd. Does it really make a difference if their listeners head from one station to another? Looking at 35-64, KPRC is ranked 26th, and KNTH is 31st. If a tree falls in the woods and a bear wipes is behind with a rabbit... does the rabbit hear the tree fall? In looking at 950, if they can get half of Walton & Johnson's listeners to make the switch, they'll be ahead of the game.. even if every current listener changes stations, they'll still be way ahead of KNTH. No disrespect Chuck, but taking the current KPRC listeners... if you got them all, would give you a 1.0 share in adults 25-54, and a 1.7 35 to 64. That's way better than what you have, but it's still leaving a little to be desired ratings wise. I don't see KPRC caring about the current listeners (because there aren't that many to begin with). It'll be interesting to see what the changes make if any. Only time will tell... but then again, isn't that pretty much true for everything?

I wasn't able to edit in time. I had to go downstairs to the kitchen and turn the steak over. Look at the hour by hour starting at 5AM. In the mornings we are gaining. In fact, we are beating them in morning drive. The demise of KPRC began when they fired Pat Gray. That was a bad move. Moving Rush to KTRH was a nother audience shock. That audience began sampling other stations, specifically, KSEV & KNTH.
Rush is difficult to beat. Dennis Prager is a good alternative. In fact, I find him informative and and a good communicator. Michael Medved is up against Sean Hannity. Hugh Hewitt is up against Michale Savage. Both Hannity and Savage are hard to beat, but not unbeatable. Salem is very patient and moves very slow. We are slowly building an audience.

I liked it better when KTRH was News and KPRC was talk. This city is big enough to sustain a 24-Hour All-News channel. That will be my recommendation for KBME, when they become the odd-man out in the Sports Talk game. Once 1560's signal and processing problems are addressed, they'll be a force to be reckoned with and KILT will continue to tread water. I just can't see KBME hanging in there with the better competition. However, I do believe Cheap Channel won't do it because of the costs.

Chuck.. I would listen to cats in a dryer over Michael Savage... man, how can people listen to him? I don't get it... I thought I was angry enough to listen, but apparently I am not.

Cats in a dryer. I had to laugh about that. Several years ago, come to think of it, many years ago while I was at 1590 KIKN in Corpus Christi, I was at the local washateria early in the morning, washing the rags. I got my clothes and threw them into a dryer, when suddenly the clothes flew back amidst green eyes and black paws with protruding claws. This was accompanied by a hiss, screech and a low growl as it flew through my clothes exposing a huge black short haired cat. It was about the size of a small dog. It went out through the open door faster than my 1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring, which I was driving at that time. It was a 24 hour washateria. This cat must have strolled in and climbed up in one of the dryers and went to sleep. Of all the dryers with open doors, I would select the one where this feline had taken up residence for a little slumber. I have never again seen a cat that big. And I've never screamed like that again. (Well, maybe. But thats another story)

I think the draw to Savage is that he is so outrageous, people tune in just to see what he will say. They don't necessarily agree, they just want to be entertained. I remember when the late Alvin Van Black was on KPRC years ago. People hated him, but he had huge ratings. I asked a friend years ago why he listened to somebody he hated. He told me he just wanted hear what he was going to do next. Who was he going to call an idiot or hang up on somebody? It had to be entertainment.

I'm sure many have been in the position where you wanted to tell somebody off or hang up on somebody. On your way home after a bad day at the office, it may be entertaining to hear somebody do it for you. I think Savage does that.

Agreed, along with Hannity, Beck, Rush, Prager, and the rest of the far right wing talkers. It's the same thing over and over. I wish KNTH would go all Oldies (50's and 60's) and Standards. I think they'd do better with that, than the talk format you guys are doing right now, Chuck.

I agree whole heartedly with this post. I listened to 1560 off and on yesterday and with exception of Hoffman, I liked what I heard. Granato is more entertaining here than he was on KILT. He has no restrictions here. It should be even better when his old cohort Lance Zuerline joins him in November. I missed Richard Justice, but he had some terrific 1st day interviews from what I read. The afternoon guys are hilarious. Hoffman will get better as he gets used to it, but once their signal gets clear and they get some legs AND IF THEY PROMOTE they will force one or more of the other sports stations off the format.

Snoman, have you listened to Dennis Prager? You've lumped him in with the rest of the so called right wing radio hosts. But, have you really honestly listened to him? Listen for a week and then state what you think. I don't feel he is like the "rest." He never raises his voice. He never demeans the listener, even when some have tried to demean him. He is one of the most respectful talk show hosts I've heard.

I understand how you feel about oldies. I feel the same. However, Salem will not change KNTH.

When I lumped Prager in what that bunch, I didn't mean it as he is disrespectful and an egomaniac like those other clowns. I just don't agree with his politics and his ultra-conservative views. The guy seems like a nice guy and I remember when he had his short-lived TV show. I understand about Salem's philosophy. They could at least try B/EZ music and standards instead of straight oldies and still pull better numbers. There's just too much competition in the right-wing talk in this town.

The new KPRC did one good thing. Apparently, Sam Malone is no longer in the talk radio business from what I was able to hear when I recently tuned into the station.

To paraphrase Rome, "Less of him and more of [nearly] anybody else is a good thing"

That having been said, I was really unimpressed with what I heard on 950 when I listened.

It reminded me of O&A.
