KPRC cuts back on MDA Telethon coverage

It will carry The Jerry Lewis Telethon from 10:30PM to Midnight Sunday; From 8:00AM to 1:00PM & From 6:00 PM to 7:00PM on Monday. KPRC will show the telethon from 1:00PM to 6:00PM over on Channel 302 if you have Comcast Digital. The Telethon will also be online at www.click2houston.com.

Obviously, it is a good move for KPRC because people are very sick & tired of giving away money to the poor, desperate & needy, because it is a very sensitive moment between Hurricane Katrina & The WTC bombings, and these people have sent money to fake charities that support these causes, and whenever they do, whoever runs these organizations simply takes the money & run....

These survivors need to get a job here in Houston, or Go back to New Orleans

You know what they say, "It's all about the (money) stupid". I wouldn't exactly say that KPRC is looking after what Houstonians think in regards to giving money. I think that they are upside down on their budgets and owe most of their major advertisers buckets of rating points for gross audience underdelivery for the past couple of YEARS. They can get so much more money for those Ab Lounge informercials between 12M and 6A rather than donate that time to MDA. They cannot afford to go a day without an opportunity to make good ratings points for their suckered advertisers. KPRC has been run into the ground the last 10 years with their retarded approach to local news and a dying NBC brand around them. They are trying to make amends to their advertisers for years of gross audience undelivery and other abuses at the hands of poor management.

Don't mistake KPRC's treatment of the MDA Telethon for any kind of altruistic intentions. It's pure selfish as always with that group. They couldn't give a rat's arse about their audience in general.

The MDA Telethon of course airs on Labor Day, which means the large crew keeping the local broadcast on the air is getting holiday pay. Expen$ive. KPRC is keeping payroll costs down with the reduced hours.

Telethons are falling out of favor these days, anyway. There was a glut of them during the 80's and 90's, which eventually got lost in the 500 channel universe.

Charities are finding other ways to raise money. And much, if not most of the money that was supposedly raised during telethons was actually already in hand before the broadcast hit the air...the show itself was just a way of acknowledging corporate contributors and educating the public about the particular cause.

Remember that KPRC actually announced plans to drop the telethon entirely, but wound up keeping it since MDA couldn't find another station willing to pick it up.

Another factor why KPRC won't show the telethon: It must honor NBC's committment to show the golf tournament. I believe KXAS happens to be in a same predicament. One footnote: Chicago's WGN (Which also happens to be on Comcast) will carry the MDA telethon from 10P tonight to 3p tomorrow; It will pre-empt it for the Chicago Cubs game in LA at 3P, then it will resume coverage of the telethon right after the ballgame.

I believe it is a good move for KPRC because it has been losing more money since it was bought by Post-Newsweek over a decade ago. Ever since then, It has been like a fourth-place station in Houston. I believe late-night Informercials have been making more money than giving it to a worthless cause. Showing the telethon all-night would cost money to produce it. The telethon has been a LOCAL 2 staple since 1966, when it became a charter station, and it was a family-owned business. The Hobbys did an amazing job running BOTH KPRC-TV & Radio. The Radio Stations KPRC-FM (Now KODA) & AM are now part of the evil empire. (CC)

Anyway, There are so many things to do on this Labor-Day weekend, and giving money to Jerry's Kids is NOT one of them.
