KPRC will lose a half-hour of Local 2 First @4

But will carry ALL 4 hours of "The TODAY Show" From 7-11am. That leaves "Days of Our Lives" as NBC's ONLY daytime program. Meanwhile, "Rachel Ray" gets bumped to 2:00P, and "EXTRA" follows KPRC Local 2 first @ 4 for the time being.

You know darn right! Oprah rules @ 4 on KHOU-Channel 11; ABC-13 Eyewittness News is a close second. Meanwhile, I believe an hour of "Judge Judy" on FOX-26 has totally beaten the crap out of KPRC's Local 2-First@4. No wonder why Channel 2 has been rock bottom because Post-Newsweek has done a crappy job taking it over from The Hobby Family. It would've been better if it was owned by Hearst or Cox. A lot of news in an hour is just WAY too much. Obviously, KPRC is just repeating itself-over & over again, but they do have some nice beautiful anchors & reporters-Like Dominique & Rachel McNeill.

KPRC is really a boring station now.

The graphics are ho-hum, they are still facing an identity crisis, and the team is filled with a lot of no-names reporters.

There are some good reporters like Ryan Korsgard, Kym Alvarado-Booth, and Phil Archer but I miss the days when KPRC would take a chance and be aggressive with its news coverage. For awhile, it worked but then the audience eroded enormously when Linda Lorelle was demoted and took off Lisa Baldwin off the anchor desk. You can also blame NBC for having poor lead-ins.

How much longer will it be before it becomes an NBC O&O station? It's too bad that we aren't talking about FOX 26 but one of the big 3 stations. We know how bad FOX 26 can be but KPRC-TV is the worst and and its too bad that they have so many of those horrible newscasts since they are a big 3 station. I don't watch 26's news much since they are on UHF and they are missing an evening newscast. 11 & 13 all the way and the NewsHour on PBS.

The only reason I watch 2 is for the NBC programs. Ever since Dan Rather (a fellow Houstonian) left CBS, I started watching NBC Nightly News for a while then switched to NewsHour. NBC's news is my still my favourite for commercial TV.

BTW, when is NBC going to drop Passions? I waited for that soap to clear on KPRC-TV for 5 years.

"Passions"' last day on NBC is August 31st, then it will be moved to DirecTV on September 17th. The reason why NBC is discontinuing "Passions"? To make wave for the fourth hour of "The TODAY Show", leaving "Days of Our Lives" as its only daytime show. "Passions" will continue to produce once the show leaves Free-TV for Sattellite. I Think Local 2 Might end up becoming a FOX station or an Independent-like WJXT-which used to be a CBS station in Jacksonville. If this happens, all NBC shows might end up on KNWS-51.

...which would be a real surprise to the folks over at Fox owned and operated KRIV Fox 26.

A few years ago, I could see KPRC going independent, like the P-N station in Jacksonville did, but they seem to have a better relationship with the network now, with fewer pre-emptions (and they actually carry Conan in pattern now!).

I think, despite all rumors KRIV will stay put, and KPRC becoming becoming an Independent-well, it's out of the question.

If KPXB-DT moved out of Channel 5 and into a UHF channel, is there room for an analog Channel 5 allocation in Houston? That's a perfect spot for the FOX O&O.

For now, analog-wise, I think it's still too close to San Antonio's KENS.

Channel 5 used to be a short-lived Music Video Channel, which was headquarted in the Wells Fargo Tower in Downtown Houston.FOX would have moved KRIV to Channel 5 because there is unfilled gap between Chs. 2 & 8. I see a lot of FOX stations on the VHF side as well.

WHAT! There's no such rumor of KPRC going Fox. KRIV & KTXH are 2 of the prized top-10 duopoly stations in the Fox O&O group. KRIV's problem has been BAD (not poor, but bad) management for the last 7 years. If they ever got quality management in place at the General Manager level they certainly have the opportunity to ascend to the top spot in Houston TV in most demo ratings. KTRK is adrift and when Marvin dies soon (no disrespect intended; he has incurrable pancratic cancer) they will lose valuable rating points in their newscast. KHOU is solid and will be a force for a while to come. KPRC is, as is referred to in this post, a joke. They have new no-name and no-talent anchors and reporters on air it seems, almost every day. Has anyone seen their "Wheel of Justice" segment with the bad local game show wheel with pictures taped to it. You'll howl in laughter if you haven't seen it yet and see it for the first time. Couple all this amatuer-hour local programming with the disaster that is NBC and you have the makings of a station that could fall below the CW in ratings one day.

ANOTHER WHAT! Fox 26 will remain Fox 26. With digital becoming law in the next couple of years, UHF and VHF will be like 8-track: OBSOLETE. If you have an analog set 2 years from now, you'll have to buy a converter box to pick up the madatory digital signals. There will be no distinction between UHF and VHF. The last time any station considered a move from UHF to VHF was Channel 39 back in the late 80's. Gaylord Broadcasting (then owner of ch 39) had made initial petitions to the FCC for moving Ch 39 to Channel 5, 6 or 9, or 12, but the GM that was spearheading the move back then was transferred to Dallas and the petition move just died.

The most recent digital assignments I've seen have KPXB-DT eventually winding up on channel 32, which is currently home to KTRK-DT. KTRK's digital signal will move over to the old channel 13 analog slot after the 2/17/09 shutoff date.

It is preferable for the digitals to avoid the low-band (2-6) VHF's, anyway. Too many issues with ionospheric skip, as well as man-made interference on those frequencies.

Looks like I'll be keeping up WITH the Joneses. Well, I need to sell my Remote-Controlled analog TV to get a flat screen in order to watch High-Def TV. I think the days of VHF/UHF will soon be fading away, The say thing goes to AM/FM I feel like I'm riding on this wave.

I don't understand why any DTs would want to be in the VHF band (other than power consumption). I live south of Katy (near Grand Parkway @ FM 1093) where I can see the Missouri City sticks and I can't pick up KPXB-DT at all and KUHT-DT is very unreliable. From what I read on another Houston Over-The-Air tv boards, reliable reception of KUHT-DT is a challenging task without an outdoor antenna, even in the city. All of the UHF digitals can be reliably caught with a clothes hanger from my house but the VHFs are a different story.

How could that be possible in the first place, since Houston is too close to KFDM, KTRE, KBMT and the aforementioned KENS? If the petitions did reach the FCC brass, they would've either shot it down, or there would've been red tape involved with the other stations.

As I mentioned, the petition was filed by Gaylord. The Houston GM that spearheaded the issue was transferred to Gaylord's Dallas station (KTVT at that time) and the whole thing went away. The FCC probably would have shot it down and if it ever got legs it would have taken years and lots of $$$'s. It's a non-issue. I just brought it up for historical reference.
