KPRI Now in The Top Ten

102.1 KPRI has really gotten a ratings boost since the holidays. In the last few ratings, it's gone from the 2's to the 3's to the 4's. It's only a few-tenths away from KGB.

Most of these stations, KFOG San Francisco, WXRT Chicago, WXRV Boston, etc. have a devoted 25-54 audience but not big ratings. Only KBCO, currently tied for #3 in Denver, seems to have regular success with the format.

KPRI did move its transmitter from the Oceanside area closer to downtown San Diego, but that was several years ago. So why are San Diego radio listeners suddenly embracing the Adult Alternative format?

Could it be that the music is increasingly mainstream? AAA music is used on soundtracks, tv shows, commercials, the internet spreads the word about these artists very effectively, and a lot of the music - Adele, Of Monsters and Men, Mumford & Sons, etc. is crossing over format lines. Plus, if you're an adult who's not ready for the same 300 classic rock songs but not into the "turbo pop" and EDM stuff, AAA stations like KPRI are a comfortable listen - and involved in what's going on locally. It's a great format with a lot of strengths against the increasingly narrow C-company offerings.

Dont forget that music is also heard in stores like Walgreens to give an example.

Not too long ago there was a new panel in the PPM world in SD. Obviously they handed out several of them in OB to a bunch of pot heads with no taste in music.

There is not "a new panel" ever. The panel is permanent.

What does happen is that every month, some people (actually, "households" or "dwelling units") are replaced. They either reach the end of the 2-year maximum, they fail to comply and are booted, or they decide they don't want to do it any more.

The average turnover is around 8% from book to book.

Obviously, your taste in music differs from that of other groups in the population. Same thing happens to me, too. "Nobody" likes every format or music genre... which is why we like some stations, have no opinion on others and detest still another group.
