KPXI 100.7 Tyler Sold

Salem is selling off KPXI 100.7 Overton/Tyler to Jerry Hanszen, who has interests in KGAS-AM/FM Carthage, KMHT-AM/FM Marshall, and is the pending purchaser of KWRD Henderson...

According to the attachments, there is a LMA that will take effect on March 9 to allow programming the station before the sale concludes.

It would certainly appear that KPXI would cease simulcasting Dallas/Fort Worth market KWRD-FM 100.7 as a result of this.
 
I'm sure Jerry will put local oriented programming on it, although I'll bet that the music format comes off of a bird. That is how he runs most of his other stations, and it seems to work for him. It should be an improvement over the station's current format.

It also looks like he got a pretty good deal. KPXI has been for sale for quite some time, but the asking price a year ago was a lot more. I suspect we will see quite a few price "adjustments" on broadcast properties as time goes by.

It would be nice if he could get back the KWRD-FM call sign, but I doubt that Salem would relinquish that.

It sure was, about 985 feet. The tower was 17 miles southwest of Mount Pleasant (near the town of Purley) and KPXI could be heard along I-30 from just east of Dallas to well past Texarkana.
 
Looks as though Mr. Hanszen is taking advantage of the current economy. Good for him!

I do wonder, though, what he's going to do to distinguish KPXI from the other country outlets like KNUE, KYKX and KKUS.

Also, I hope this doesn't get hung on high center like the KWRD/Henderson transaction apparently has. Any new movement other than the LMA amendment that was filed in December?
 
The KWRD-AM fiasco is likely related to Russell, not Hanszen. Hanszen will do one of two things with KPXI. He'll either (a) make it an FM Hometown Station for Henderson (or possibly Kilgore, but his inroads are in Henderson, IMO) or (b) step into prime time and make a run at the Tyler-Longview Market.

I wondered if Hanszen might not make it more of a "hometown radio" feel for Henderson...maybe even AM1470's FM counterpart.

In either event, I'm sure he'll do well.

I will bet that KWRD and the new station will become one in the same. (I have been wrong before).
 
Great deal for Hanszen, I'm glad someone is investing in radio here. It will be interesting to see what he does with it.

But I also bet 100.7 will become KWRD-AM's sister station in Henderson for high school sports. I guess he never got night authorization for 1470. When I worked "up on the hill" in the mid 90's for Chipper Dean, local sports was our "bread and butter" for the old KGRI-FM.

If I'm figuring right, it looks like the countdown clock will hit zero at 6AM March 9th...would coincide with Hanszen taking LMA possession of KPXI. Whaddayawannabet he indeed moves KPXI's operations to Henderson and markets it as KWRD's sister. I see possibly a COL change after he takes full possession of it. Wonder if the old KGRI calls are available?
 
Not sure what geographical direction Jerry will go with the station, likely Henderson, but rumor is he may go with an ABC format. Likely one that he already has in his chain!
 
My guess he'll just simulcast the AM with ABC's "Today's Hits and Yesterday's Favorites" format.

But I'd wouldn't mind having Scott Shannon's True Oldies in East Texas.. ;D

I was surprised Jerry put an AC format on KWRD when it's been a country station for decades. ABC's Real Country would be a good fit for the FM.

In the LMA, Hanszen spells out a country format. Not surprising that it would be ABC Real Country since KGAS-FM and KMHT-FM are running the same thing.

My best guess is the AC format was done to make it abundantly clear it is the "New KWRD." By radically flipping formats, it helps break the connection with the past ownership. I think he needed to do that. Now that most people have figured out that the station is under new and local management, he might decide to flip to country. We'll see.

I had jury duty last week in Henderson, and noted that KPXI came in fine on my car radio. I think the transmitter is in Overton, which isn't very far away. My bet is it will become the sister station of KWRD-AM. I guess the answers to these and all our other questions will be revealed next week.
 
I haven't been around the boards for awhile...when I saw KPXI, it took me back to the days of the
FM in Mt. Pleasant. I was 16 the first time I heard that station in 1976.
Tried to get a job there, but ended up at KEGG in Daingerfield as my first radio job.

Lots of memories in thos old call letters, though.
