It looks like KQBT is tired of their 1 share and is trying something different. I noticed over the weekend that they are now playing anything from Madonna's "Material Girl" to La Bouche "Be My Lover" to REM "Losing My Religion" to Pussycat Dolls "Buttons". Very eclectic in genre but the music is either midtempo or uptempo. No ballads. I'm still hearing old school like Rick James but mixed in with currents like Nelly Furtado. Is this their version of the new movin format or is it a rhythmic "eD-fm"?
Their new imaging says "stopless music" but also says the old line of "Albuquerque jams from back in the day". How can you say you're playing songs from "back in the day" if you're throwing in Gnarls Barkley? And wouldn't throwing currents in be competing with their sister KKSS? Kiss IMHO is underperforming anyway. They should have at least a 6 share by default. That's a different story, though.
Personally, I like the variety. There playing more dance and less burnt out Motown artists. I still say, however, it's not good for more than a 2 share unless they promote it. Listeners have to "find them" on the dial. They need billboards, TV spots, street presence etc. which Univision likely will not do. Hiring a couple of jocks would help, too. Again unlikely.
Any comments?
