KQBT To Sport New Owners

Radio Ink and others confirm Univision has agreed to sell B 101.7 to Team Communications for $1.4 million, and the switch to all sports will follow.

I wish Joe and his Bunch well. They will need the Scorpions, Isotopes etc to have any chance of making it.
Question will they get any Lobos (thats where the $$$ is)
In towns with Big time sports it is hard enough to have two sports stations, what do you guys think an I OFF Base!!!

Been away for awhile..but on this issue..off base?
My opinion, is that Joe and friends are putting their money where their mouths and ideas are.
Gutsy move..it is certainly a gamble that they are willing to take.
Got to admire that.

We opine about it..they do it. There's the difference.

Doomed
Look for high school football games and 5 dollar spots till the cows come home

Lobos are locked and there will be no rateing.

What about the sports format at KDEF?

High School games if done right can make a lot of money. Same with sports radio. Innovation! Different! This is what the stale lame Albuquerque market needs. Not another Mexican, Country, or Classic Rock station! Something different can and will make money. For those of you not aware the majority of Lobo sports is now on national television via CSTV/The Mtn. which is now on Direct Tv and they just fired the Legend Mike Roberts from their broadcasts. Look for Lobo sports on radio to tank this year as everyone will be watching on TV. It is obvious that 610's ratings are in the tank and with competition can easily be taken over.

Please KDEF? That station has been run into the ground. How the FCC hasn't pulled the plug on that train wreck is beyond me.

Well, I was just wondering as I know they have been airing Aggie games and high school games too. Of course they are absent in the ratings book along with the other AM clutter stations KKIM, KDAZ etc.

Well with Kob having ESPN locked up along with Jim Rome all they will have, will be what? Fox sports and some retread local guys. Look the ticket had local guys and Fox sports net and never even got a 0.1 share and must not have been making any money or it wouldn't have been fliped right?

The 101.7 guys have the main guy that sold sports at KOB I believe, so look for some buddy buys but if they do it the way the ticket did it then it will not be long for this world, but get the Scorpions & The NFL Broncos, DIamond Backs & they may get some $$$$ Dan Patrick in the 10a-3p slot or better yet 3p-6p Counter program a big name national guy against Mr. Local

Don't Get me wrong I wish them well but this town is not big enough for two Sports fomats. The only pasionate fans are Lobo Fans so talk lobos 6p-9p

Just My Thoughts. Once again it will NOT be easy and it may take ahile unless the Better Signal of 101.7 FM is novel enough to beat the Animal!

As I understand it 1310 ownership group got out of the Albuquerque market and 1310 was their last signal so they sold when a buyer became available. It wasn't them leaving due to ratings or money. Just the group leaving town... Once again that is as I understand it. If I'm wrong someone please correct me...

From my experience in talk radio local sells way better than national. Whether it is buddy buys or just the fact that the local guy can come say hello, do remotes, or whatever else. If I'm not mistaken the Cowboys are available and that should be the first team the new station should lock up. If not them go for the Broncos and/or Raiders. If you're talking baseball get Dodgers, Yankees, and/or Cubs, don't mess with Rockies or Diamondbacks unless that is the only option. I would only touch the Aggies if they are sold. Try to get the local teams I guess though I'm not sure how much of a radio following the Scorpions have as they don't even get that many people in the arena. However if there is money lock them up, the T-Birds, Wildcats, and really go hard with HS sports which is big in this state.

Years ago prior to Tafoya ruining KDEF there were 2 sports stations going and going strong, but it wasn't the fact that both stations couldn't be supported as much as it was horrible management at 1150 that caused the demise of that station. DoubleC I don't know if you read the posts on the link but I find that most fans don't care for the Animal hosts and an alternative would be welcomed. Hopefully O'Neill doesn't make the mistake of 106.3 and try to be the same as 610. Be different, stick with it awhile, and it will beat out the Animal.

Check the article in the paper. They did the right thing grabbing the Cowboys. Dan Patrick is okay I guess, kind of dry, Foxsports is also okay. However, it isn't the national talent that makes a local station, it is the local talent. I see they want two locals. I would make it 3 locals AM, Noon, PM.

Don't tell KJFA their Non local morning show is kicking butt.
Remember just being local does not make you a winner (Ask KAGM all local 6a-9p)
You have to Have talent

KAGM had plenty of talent it was the timing of the whole thing. The non-770 guys were doing alright. It was the guys that floated over from 770 that were horrible, as they didn't change anything. Plus putting the wife and husband was a disaster that was only compounded when Larry and that girl did the show. The afternoon guys were terrible, but their sports show guys from the website link was solid as was their weekend movie show, I think they are doing internet audio now. 1310 Siembieda was okay. He was kind of straight laced but not a horrible guy. Their morning show and noon show was God awful as well. It is all about getting talent that connects to the local public.

Tafoya killed that station in so many ways I'm surprised he can still make the power bills to light the flame. The guy has had countless offers to sell the place and has turned it down. For several years he had a really good host in Dom Zarella. Tafoya had on staff one awesome producer/technical director who produced all the games,(Dukes, High School, Aggies, etc.) and events that required a board op. This guy came from Phoenix's KFYI and stayed up until the guy figured out what was about to happen. He left 3 months before the FCC popped KDEF. (The guy said he was told that Tafoya logs the transmitter himself every 3 hrs. and he would be the only one to do so. This put the producer's FCC license at risk besides the station's.)

We almost hired Tafoya's former producer about this last winter to go back on the air, and doing music direction. Until he landed a position with a Prod. House and is pulling down 50K/yr in Arizona doing production and spots.

The last I heard Tafoya does the cut-ins and remotes via cell phone and his offices are in a trailer at his tower site to the North of Balloon Fiesta Park. Still virtually an unattended operation 24/7.

I guess Tafoya is up to his ears in debt from the televised games of the Aggies also.

It would not surprise me in the least, if he went dark or sold within 2 years.

Ah... Yes I did,

My former room mate in New Mexico used to be the one who worked for Tafoya.

Overworked, and under appreciated when he did save his sorry arse.

Careful beave, someday that same roomie might be writing about you....... that's it my final comments, on the subject. Adios

palalwanabe- The sad thing is that it is more than just the beaves roomie that felt that way after working at KDEF and there is a reason why that station is in the tank, and with there being only one constant. Too bad really as at one time 1150 could have been a serious moneymaker with their sports format. However, when a PD becomes jealous of his/her talent bad things happen
