KQCA-58. Sacramento..Programming Ideas, Anyone?

E

Since it is a given that KQCA, Channel 58 (Sacramento)will be going independent come the fall, does anyone have any programming ideas? Should they promote the fact they are independent over other local programming? Or should they go ahead and program their station like nothing ever happened? Oprah and Doctor Phil reruns during prime time?

What would you do if you had to program Channel 58? Any particular shows you would program? Would you program movies in prime time or late nights? Is something missing from Northern California television that oughtta be on? Classic TV or cartoons? Infomercial blocks? Paid Preaching? Spanish--Full powered NBC/Telemundo outlet?

Well, this is the place to air your suggestions.

Looking at what is currently on KQCA, it doesn't look like it is a particularly strong station, but it also isn't a complete disaster. And remember that there is only four hours on weekdays to fill, which isn't too bad.

I'd probably move the repeats of Dr. Phil and Oprah into prime time, where they'd be likely to get much better ratings than in their current daytime and late night slots. They'd also make a good lead-in for the 10 PM newscast.

Since I'm strongly partial to classic TV shows, I might try a two hour block of shows like Bewitched, Brady Bunch, etc in the 3 - 5 PM slot currently filled by the WB now. If that worked, it could eventually be expanded to take in more of the daytime schedule, which would allow dumping some of the marginal shows currently contaminating the daytime on this station (Elimidate, anyone? -- anything would be an improvement).

As for the 11 PM hour...for now, I'd just fill it with a second run of a couple of the afternoon sitcoms -- either the newer shows (like the Simpsons) or classic stuff, depending on availability.

This seems like a station that should work with just moderate changes...

Don't count on Dr. Phil, KCRA/KQCA loses Dr. Phil at the start of the next season to KMAX/KOVR.

If I had my way, I would bring back the cartoons, both mornings(replacing Armstrong And Getty) and afternoons. The classic cartoons like Popeye, Flintstones, Yogi Bear and Jonny Quest not the new ones. Between 9:AM and 3:pM I would program classic sitcoms like Happy Days, Get Smart, Gomer Pyle and Green Acres. From 5:pM-8:pM would be the newer sitcoms(Simpsons, Friends, etc.) and from 8:pM - 10:pM would be a prime time movie(bring back The 58 oclock Movie)Prime Time News at 10:pM. Classic Dramas like The Fugitive, Hawaii Five-O etc. from 11:pM-1:AM and All Night Classic Movies of the 30's 40's and 50's from 1:AM-6:AM. On weekends I would have specialty programming like Three Stooges, Abbott And Costello and Laurel and Hardy as well as classic Sci-Fi shows like Lost In Space, Star Trek and Twilight Zone plus have a Creature Features type of show on Saturday Nights. Now back to reality: None of what I just wrote will happen. It should but probably won't. We'll get Oprah,or some court shows in Prime Time,Infomercials will probably increase. especially All Nights. We might get some more movies on weekends (like KICU-36 San Jose) but not the relly good ones. Telemundo? Hmmm, interesting but probably won't happen as long as Hearst Argyle owns it. Just my Two Cents.

58 only flips to Telemundo if NBC/Uni buys it outright. Otherwise, KCSO-LP is probably going to keep it for a while.

:30 programs>? Let's get some :60 in there. Bring back reruns of White Shadow, Eight is Enough, Hart to Hart, Dallas, Dukes of Hazzard, Sid and Marty Kroft for Saturdays. Air some high school sports with 1380AM. Create a niche.

Dallas is unavailable for local airing due to the exclusive agreement with SoapNet, which doesn't expire for at least another year.

Ditto Dukes of Hazzard with CMT.<P ID="signature">______________

Cartoons may be an option BUT not the ones you mentioned. Yes would love to see these back on independent stations and CW affiliates but I believe Turner has exclusive rights and will no longer sell broadcast rights to them. They currently only are seen on Boomerang and maybe Cartoon Network.

Also a good idea. Still I doubt any of the UPN or WB stations losing the network will change much at all. Keep in mind WB only airs 4 hours a day of shows and UPN only 2 hours. This means that only that many hours will need to be replaced. The rest of the day is not affected anyway. Keep in mind when Fox affiliates that lost Fox to New World stations but did not take another major network like NBC or ABC or CBS remained much the same the rest of the broadcast day.

So I dont see any big changes on how UPN or WB stations that do not gwt the CW Network.
