KQED takes what KALW has been offering once again. When KALW went to a news and information format many years ago, KQED dropped its classical and went to news and info. Now that KALW has firmly established a news department and won awards for it (on a shoestring budget, no less), KQED is now going to be running a for-real news department.

It is good to see KQED doing more than being mostly a conduit for NPR, APM, and PRI programs, but it makes me chuckle at the ideas they take and then pretend to be the only game in town.

For those who aren't aware, KALW, the oldest FM in the West, continues to operate in SF at 91.7.

Apropos of which: Holly Kernan rocks....

Amen. It's been amazing -- astounding -- what she's been able to accomplish given KALW's shoestring budget and the cutbacks in reporting across the board (translated as fewer sources available).
