KQID Alexandria

Are they operating at reduced power? I can usually get a clear signal from where I am in north LA.. Been nothing but static for the past week or so

I asked that question a while back and the response I got was transmitter troubles and they were going to replace it.

I *think* they have a low power that still covers Alexandria, but I am not sure on that. I guess I could look it up.

Well, they don't have a licensed backup, but they may be running low. The tower is in Jena.

So you made me curious. I looked through their Facebook. Apparently, they have been this way since 8/22, which even I do not understand. Changing a transmitter is a single day job.

Maybe Matt will comment here further on what is going on.

I remember being down to the backup transmitter for days at a time once, but can't remember why, and I know once, before I got there in spring of 2001, they'd had almost an entire ratings period on the backup unit, and their ratings suffered mightily, but don't remember the reason(s) why then, either.

So they do have a backup, then, Ron?

What does it cover? Do you remember? It is unlicensed, so there is no FCC data on it.

I may have to be in Alex over the weekend, assuming they haven't returned to the air by then we'll find out if they're running a backup. Browsing their facebook page it looks like the 17th was the day they went off. Needless to say, two weeks is a looooong time.

Yeah, every time we had to fire up the backup transmitter, you could feel your reproductive organs slowly eroding inside you. I have no idea about it's FCC license standing. Never asked.

So many people who don't know how to pick up the phone and ask.... #1. KQID has been experiencing ongoing problems with it's 25 year old transmitter. Ownership decided to invest, at a time when the economy sucks, 150k in a new state of the art solid state transmitter with the intention of adding HD early in 2012. Nautel gave us a firm ship date that would have only had us on our (Licensed) in town back for less than a week. A pending major software update delayed shipment more than a week. During that time we have spent close to 25K upgrading the transmitter building. New closed AC system, all new electrical service and new STL. The new transmitter will be delivered and if all goes according to plan, will be on the air this weekend. #2 The long outage Ron mentions was due to the fact that some damn Bubba decided it would be fun to shoot out the tower lights and instead took out 125k of rigid coax and two bays on our ERI. #3. KQID has a licensed backup. It is part of the original license and for some reason it is not listed, as many other things are not, on the FCC website. You are welcome anytime to come into the studios 9 to 5 and I will be glad to show it to you. As a matter of fact, I will add it to the Online public file early next week. If I sound bitchy it is because we have all been busting our asses to get this baby up and running. When it is, it will again be the strongest signal in central Louisiana. Until then, please call me if you have any more questions.. 318-445-1234 x206

I appreciate the update, but you can tone it down a notch. We weren't crucifying you. Just wondering what was going on with a radio station in our state.

Ya know, I was there almost five years, and thankfully, I don't recall ever having to go all the way up to Jena to see that site, first-hand. For that, I can be thankful that Dave and Lenny (usually both) made the haul when duty called. I don't think anybody was being critical, Dave. Just radio geeks scratching their heads and wondering aloud.
