The spring books show an interesting ranking of various stations across the country with, technically, an Oldies format. I say technically because it can be pretty much assumed that the play lists completely delete music prior to 1964 and the focus is on the 70's with heavy doses of the Eagles, Neil Diamond, and also Donna Summers. Do we call it Oldies; only if you are in your 40's.
Someone questioned earlier how KQQL FM in Minneapolis was performing. Minneapolis is the # 11 radio market, so Arbitron measured 23 AM & FM stations in the market. The spring '05 book for Minneapolis has KQQL FM ranked # 8 with a 4.4 share. Not bad considering you have the monster AM WCCO the perenial favorite of the Upper Midwest, a country FM and a 800 lb. CHR gorilla in front of them. So you say, how do they do it? Well to answer that, I had the opportunity to listen to an hour of Dan Donovan, the heritage AM DJ from "when radio was great". Here's what he played:
4:34 You're the One that I Love (Olivia Newton John)
4:41 Louie Loui' (Stories?)
4:45 Get Back (Beatles)
4:48 Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond)
4:52 Stop Set
4:53 Brown Eyed Girl
4:56 Stop Set
5:00 Every day at 5 Dan plays what he calls a "Forgotten 45". This day it was Honeycomb (Jimmy Rogers.)
5:03 It's Alright (JJ Jackson)
5:06 Darling Eyes
5:09 Just a Song Before I go
5:11 Stop Set
5:14 Henry the 8th
Oldies format? I think not but it pulls a 4.4 share for KQQL FM.
