KQV: How much longer?

How much longer can they hold on with the all-news format that does very little business? They didn't even bother to air election returns last week, one morning their computers were out and they run stale tapes on the weekends. It's a relatively expensive format to run and the owners are old: Dick Scaife is 77 and Bob Dickey is 82. They've been propping it up with personal cash for years.

The last AFTRA contract was a one-year extension. People leave and replacements are not hired. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if someday they gave up the ghost with live AM drive programming and the satellite for the other 20 hours.

Bring back the Sixties. If WKFB can go by "KFB" on a slightly masked nostagia trip, why not do it on the real thing?

KQV: is the energizer bunny it'll run and deliver results forever

I don't work for KQV. I buy advertising time there as well as other stations and it is a fantastic station. It delivers results. They don't buy the book.(arbitron) and now with the people meter. it's not going to show results. my personal listener survey is results driven.. not arbitron driven. So KQV still delivers good accurate news. and results for my customers. more than I can say for some big FM's that charge a lot more. It's an Allegheny County Station. But I'll stack their news head to head with the other big guns in town. stuck in traffic. I test them. they have the right info. their weather service is local and accurate. people listen to the station and more importantly people with income listen to the station. So if you are trying to stick a fork in this I think you are mistaken. Now I miss fun lovin kqv too. but kqv is the only thing on am that is working right. so look at 1360 and 1250 and sadly what ever is going to come on 860.. and poke around there for a while

I had heard years ago that the overhead was minimal enough that all they had to do was sell out AM drive and they were OK. Don't know if that's still the case.

No, they have been losing money for a while, although the losses have escalated alarmingly in the last two years. Scaife keeps writing really big checks and they get by as best they can. The format is really dated, most of the equipment should have been carted off to a museum years ago, and their staff is stretched to the limit every day, but they at least try. Its the last bastion of real radio news left in town. Dickey and Scaife aren't getting any younger and the second either one of them isn't in the picture the place is toast. Instantly.

KQV is on in my car at least 40 minutes a day. If you don't care how bad the "dems" are, and how everything would be perfect if only republicans were in charge, KQV and 'MNY are your only bet. The Bruce Williams show is a nice option, too, again if you don't care about Mike Pintak talking about how stupid Obama is. I'm college educated, make money, and I'm not over 50. Oh, and the Ray Luchia show on WMNY from noon-3pm is some of the coolest radio you'll hear, even if you don't care about money.

No more calls.....We have found WMNY's listener.

Funny thing about KQV. When you open Dick Scaife's newspaper you know instantly what side of the political spectrum its on. Don't get that at 1410. Outside of the falling out with CBS Radio over the Dan Rather affair Scaife has just written the checks and let Dickey run an old fashioned news room. Sad there aren't more like it.

Whenever I can pick the signal, love KQV and I have listened to ND football and Duquesne bball quite often in the past.

Hopefully Dickie Scaife has set up a trust fund to keep KQV running after his demise. I don't think any of his scions are stupid enough to lose tens of millions on the Pgh Trib review as he has, but hopefully he can set aside a mill or two to keep 1410 on the air for awhile.

Huh??? This is the same station that introduced President Clinton's weekly radio address as William Jefferson Blythe Clinton - each and every week!

So reciting a President's full name is conservative, but just the first and last is liberal?

Forgive me if I'm missing your point.

It's conservative if you're:

-Saying it sarcastically. (that would be the Jefferson part)
-Pointing out that he renounced his birth father's name.

The same as if you're saying "Barack Hussein Obama" every time you refer to our current POTUS. No, you're not saying anything that isn't public knowledge, but you are making a point of it.

not like I haven't heard Chimpy W. Bushhitler mentioned many times down below 92 on my FM dial....

they like to think that they are

I thought All-News stations just did the old rip-and-read? So this is a NT trying to cloak themselves as a All-News?
