KQV

They may have a Post SunRise Authorization.and /or Post Sunset Authorization allowing them to come up to 500 watts at 6 am and use up to 500 watts 2 hours after sunset ( 5:15 pm January ).

I hear an announcement they are running which states that their programming is made
possible in part by the Westmoreland County Food Bank. How does that work exactly?

By underwriting do you mean they support them financially?
I'm not sure that if people who gave to a food bank knew they were underwriting
a radio station they'd be too crazy about the idea.

non-profits frequently underwrite on non-commercial stations. Most non-commercial stations are at least partly funded by donations from listeners so reaching that segment of radio listeners who already support non-profit organizations is somewhat logical. They might get a few donations that add up to well more than they spent. In essence it's not much different from the children's hospitals and animal support groups that buy so heavily on commercial television. Such underwriting builds awareness and likely the number of donations.

Eric O'Brien has reported on PBRTV that the last of KQV's original five towers on the North Side has been knocked down. A new, shorter tower will be erected on the site for communications purposes. KQV, of course, is back on the air using the WEDO tower, but it really does feel like the end of an era. We'll see what the new era with Bob and Ashley Stevens brings to KQV.
