I just got word that former KQV newsman Mark Schaefer has passed away. I don't have any details yet. Mark came to KQV after nearly 10 years at Channel 11 (WIIC). Mark left KQV after the change to all news. Mark had been living in Allison Park since his retirement. I'll more details as I get them.

I'm sorry to hear about Mark. I worked with him at KQV and he was a real gentleman.

Did you know that he was a fairly good baseball player and actually dressed for a New York Giants game? He didn't get into the game, but came close.

There is no bit in the Post Gazette yet. Here is the story from KQV's website. (courtesy of Frank Gottleib)

Longtime KQV listeners may remember the voice of Mark Schaefer

Otto "Mark" Schaefer, who was a newsman at KQV from 1966 until the early 90's, died early Friday at the age of 84.

A native of New York City, he was once a batting practice pitcher for the Giants. Schaefer served in the Army Air Corps during World War Two. After his discharge, he began his broadcast news career at stations in Alabama, and eventually worked his way to Pittsburgh, where he was one of the original newscasters at WIIC-TV. He left WIIC, which is now channel 11 WPXI, to work at KQV.

Mark Schaefer is survived by 5 children and their families.

There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be private.

This audio of Mark is from my KQV website. (1975 during the Joey Reynolds era)

Mark was a true gentleman.....he transitioned very well from the days of the 14/KQV "Mark Schaefer Report" days through the joey reynolds "nobody really know which shift they work day to day" era ...to working at all news on KQV under Bob Dickey et al....

a consumate(sp) professional........

1 am deeply moved by the loss of MARK SCHAEFER....The Heart and soul of KQV Radio News in the 1950' 60s' 70's and 80's.....I Asked mark one day how do you get so focused and deliberate in your delivery of news ....His replay was simple..."Just think of the worst thing someone has done to you and dwell on it" then read the news...I worked at KQV during the Pittsburgh Penquin Hockey years.. 1980 thru 1985. Mark was one of a kind...He would sit down and really talk to you....He was a true getleman and never too busy to help if you needed help...He will truly be missed....Bob Scharnhorst former production engineer KQV/WDVE
