kraddick dead of heart attack

I was in deep shock hearing about this on twitter last night. RIP to a great man, and a role model and inspiration to all.

Great obit for a great man.

We can all learn from Kidd, and I think that's the best legacy he can have. With that in mind, I post this quote from the obit:

"He had a business sense about him to go with his talent and that’s why millions are mourning this man today. He not only knew how to make great radio, he knew how to bring it to a lot of people."

That quote really says it well. Radio needs people who aren't just on-air talent, but have the business and marketing skills to bring that talent to the masses. That means doing things that some in radio don't like. But that's what it takes to become a legend.

How many morning DJs have had a successful multi-decade career without being crude or vulgar or insulting? Rick Dees, Dick Whittinghill, Robert W. Morgan and all three of WOR's John Gamblings immediately come to mind.

And, of course, Kidd Kraddick.

No California stations carried his show but he was heard on Z93, KLJZ in Yuma, Arizona. Few of us in Los Angeles ever got to hear him.

Per WFAA, Big Al said meetings are being held to determine what will be the show's next move. I have to think it's not looking good though. I think J-Si and Jenna were being developed to eventually replace Al and Kellie down the road but no one could have prepared to replace the host.

Very tough circumstances. Has there ever been any precedence for something like this in radio?

Not really. Not at all.

I expect the show to either: Rebrand - Keep the gang but rename it and change the skits and stuff. Or...Dissolve - disband the show and staff.

Why not find a new host? They might have to wait a little longer so it won't seem dis respectful...... I don't know the show as well as some others, but maybe it could also work without a lead person, just have the four of them in there talking about topics. If you need a center, I could see Kelly fitting in to that role..or J-Si

Trying to do a Kidd Kraddick program without Kidd Kraddick? Isn't that like trying to continue the Sanford & Son tv series without Sanford and the son? (The reworked series, The Sanford Arms, didn't last long.) On August 5, after a week of repeats of older broadcasts, the Kidd Kraddick show will again be broadcast live from KHKS and syndicated to 75 other stations. Jenna Owens, Kellie Rasberry, “Big Al” Mack and Jose “J-Si” Chavez will be there.....but---obviously---no Kidd Kraddick.

This is one of those things you have to try even if it's going to fail in time. We morn, but then life has to get back to normal. This might work for a few weeks, but Kidd Kraddick was the driving force behind that show. The cast has a show to do five days per week without their star player. I'm not trying to be an ass, but this is reality. Kidd will be deeply missed and no one can replace him.

Hey LARadioRewind, are you forgetting how Laughlin had himself delivered to a staff meeting in an ambulance and came in to the building on a stretcher, fully covered by a sheet, and jumped up to exclaim that "Radio's Not Dead"?

As a matter of fact, I thought he pulled that stunt while in LA.

Soon thereafter, Laughlin was out of that gig... then forming a consultancy with Ron Chapman... and (presently I believe) he's the head of Kraddick's Yea Co?

Laughlin will think of something. Personally I think they should hold open auditions ala Regis and Kelly when Rege retired...

I came across this tweet claiming Kidd had cocaine in his system. Any idea where they're getting this idea? It's tagged #FoxNews but it seems like the guy is trying to get Fox's attention rather than credit them as a source.

While I'm a long-time KKITM listener and was quite fond of Kidd's persona, I can't say I'd be 100% shocked. He talked a lot about having ADD and chronic insomnia. That said, it's a pretty dirty thing to imply about someone so recently deceased.

That guys perhaps is trying to start a rumor, but will obviously fail. However I have heard rumors of drug usage a day after his death going around because of what you said about him talking about ADD & chronic insomnia (which is why he often called himself at times No Sleep Kidd - NSK when it occurred). I wouldn't be surprised either man.

This I do know: The toxicology report should be back by now...

THIS....from webmd:

Why do the forensic toxicology tests take so long?
Getting a complete and accurate forensic toxicology test result can be a lengthy process for a variety of reasons, according to the College of American Pathologists and experts interviewed by WebMD.

There may be a lot of specimens that need to be tested, which means more testing time. And as an investigation proceeds, information about the possibility of another drug being involved may surface, so even more testing may be needed.

When the first round of positive tests have to be confirmed by the more sophisticated method, this may require sending out the specimens to more specialized laboratories. And that adds to the delay.

"Four to six weeks is pretty standard," Magnani says of the time line for forensic toxicology testing. Besides the time needed for painstaking analysis and confirmation, she says, there could be a backlog of tests that need to be done at a particular laboratory.

"Each one should be handled thoroughly, whether they are a celebrity or not," she says.
