KRAV History Question

It was "Mix" several times during the last 20 years. It was "Mix 96.5" in, I believe, '91 and ran the Mix jingle package Nationwide's "Mix" stations in Houston and Dallas used for a year or so. Then, it flipped to soft AC "Lite 96.5 KRAV" for another year or two before going back to being just "96.5 KRAV."

The current "Mix 96" launched in either late '96 or early '97 after Cox/New City bought it from Kravis. I didn't live in Tulsa at the time, but I seem to remember the change happened almost immediately after Cox announced it was buying the station. New City promptly LMA'ed it while Cox's deal to buy New City was pending with the FCC. It was around Labor Day '96 when Cox announced it was buying KRAV from Kravis.

Trivia question - what was KRAV called back in its 'Beautiful Music' phase? It was changed with great fanfare to FM 96, KRAV in the mid 1970s when Kravis switched away from the old format.

What year did KRAV 96.1 in Tulsa become "Mix 96"?

We could always ask Mix 96 Program Director Steve Hunter. In the past I've found him to be very honest and truthful; especially when you strap him into a lie detector that shoots 50,000 volts through him every time he tells a fib.

I have no idea, I was listening to KAKC AM-FM, KELi, KGGF and local KWON 1400 while growing up in Bartlesville and couldn't stand that format.

I do remember when KRAV flipped to AC in the summer of 1976. The first song I remember FM 96 playing was Neil Sedaka's "Love In The Shadows". I also remember them playing 50's oldies like Toni Fisher's "The Big Hurt" (whooosh!)..

How long has the new morning show been on Mix? Not a bad show.

It's not new. The female is new...and horrible. But Dave Weston is there to save the day. As long as that doesn't change, the show will likely keep on keepin' on.

My recollection is that KRAV went off the air in the spring of 1972. They were building or had just built new state-of-the-art studios on Harvard (I think between 15th and 21st street on the east side of Harvard.) They came back on the air with an automated easy listening format (Bonneville) within a year. They were competing against KWEN (Shulke) in a market that would support one BM, but not two. In the summer of 1976 Swanson sold KWEN and within a week or so KRAV went AC. And the rest is history.

I don't remember KRAV's studios being on Harvard - thought they were in the Mansion House building next to University Club Tower.

I seem to remember KMOD being near 12th and Harvard in the late 60s or early 70s, however.

Right. KRAV was in Mansion house (after the trailer days). KMOD was at University Club towers, next to the transmitter. KRAV's transmitter was there also. Diplexed with KMOD. The AM 1300 was on Skelly Drive between Harvard and Lewis. 2700 Center, I think.

In 1967 1970 KRAV was in the 1st National Bank building. Mike Flynn was the PD and Dick Schmitz was the production director. In 1969 Bill Miller (former PD at KELi) was listed as PD. In 1970 Will Jones was the PD. The 1971 Broadcasting Yearbook has no listing for KRAV. 1972 there is no address for KRAV, only an ad for the Skitch Henderson show on KRAV. This was during the time Henderson was conductor of the Tulsa Symphony. And this may be when KRAV moved to the KFMJ transmitter site in West Tulsa. This also about the time Carl Smith left KRAV for a year or two. 1973 yearbook shows no staff or address format is conservative adult pop. As far as the studio on Harvard, I don’t think they ever moved into the building, and I’m not sure the studios were ever completed.
